MLB.com updated their list and had Caratini 13th, immediately in front of Candelario, Jimenez, Tseng, Torres, Blackburn, and Black.

EDIT: For the other side of that coin, Caratini was immediately behind Vogelbach, Johnson, Vizcaino, and McKinney.

I had initially hoped for more. But considering Bonifacio wasn't sticking around and has more or less sucked since the first month of the season and Russell's peripherals are worse than his baseball card numbers, I'll take this deal. And I'm a fan of adding more catching prospects to the system. Any idea on this kid's ceiling?

@GDubCub: Cubs sending roughly $1 million to Braves in trade

BA on the trade: http://www.baseballamerica.com/majors/trade-central-braves-add-russell-bonifacio-cubs-caratini/

CUB ACQUIRE:

Victor Caratini, c

Age: 20

Just 20, Caratini was the 65th pick overall a year ago, signing for $800,000. While the Cubs have a prospect bonanza in the infield and outfield, they were short inventory behind the plate because they see Kyle Schwarber, whom they drafted fourth overall this year from Indiana, as an outfielder or first baseman. The switch-hitter has a solid bat and shows consistent gap power. He has good hands that work at the plate and in the field as he was recruited as a third baseman.

“He’s a guy we liked in the draft a lot,” Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer told the Chicago Tribune. “We said all along catching is a weakness in our system that we don’t have enough of it.

Well, Hoyer sees him as a catcher, so...

Caratini was ranked as the Braves' top hitter and top power hitter in their 2013 draft class by Baseball America.

Russell and Bonifacio are scheduled to earn about $1.4 million for the rest of the season, and about $1 million will be sent to the Braves.

Total in season savings just short of 7m on the year.

@PWSullivan wow, how sad, A baller with no pop for 2 Top tier players, Awful move

for some reason it took me 8 times to read that with the right emphasis; "A baller" instead of "a BALLER"

I'm interested to see where Caratini gets assigned. He's currently at A ball, which would imply Kane County. But we've got Brockmeyer and Remillard there (and should have Zagunis there). We've got Contreras and Schwarber at Daytona. I guess Krist could get the axe.

We've suddenly got a fairly crowded catcher situation in A ball.

One of the beat guys said he's going to Kane County.

It'll be interesting to see how they manage playing time. Pretty much a sure thing Zagunis stays at Boise now, though.

Didn't beat writers say Kane county?

Love this trade. I always liked russell a bit more than I shoulld, but turnning russell and bonifacio into a good catching prospect with pop? awesome ... might be my favorite deal of ths regime's run when you factorin the talent involved.I

i liked when we acquired our franchise first baseman for an oft-injured pitcher who should probably be pitching in relief.

How is the Braves system ranked? I can't see Caratini cracking our top 20, which isn't a complaint.

Braves system is pretty bad these days. A lot of Braves fans will argue that it's because a lot of youngsters are in the bigs, and that is sort of true, but they've had a down cycle in terms of missing on some key picks.

Caratini's ranking for me will be wildly swayed by what I hear about his defense the rest of the year. If he looks to be a potential asset at catcher, he's top 15. If he's an iffy 3B at best, then he's struggling to stay top 25-30.

If one views him as someone that can't stick behind the plate long run, then his value is awfully low. It'd be Bruno-ish value, a guy who could be good, but is hard to rate awful high unless he keeps performing as the skillset wouldn't really demand it.

Ceiling's a potential first division starter. I like him a lot, more than most probably, but it is a long way to go, and a lot can happen, but I think the package suggests that he could be a top catching prospect if he puts it together.

Edit: Originally had a comment about how I thought Zagunis was a decent comp, but more I think about it, it doesn't make sense. I do think he has a higher ceiling than Zagunis, and both aren't certain to stick behind the dish, but not the best comp.

As a side note on the whole Caratini thing, he's played in a park that really suppresses homers in Rome. I actually hadn't looked at the numbers in awhile, but looking at it now, his splits show that he's actually hit for solid pop on the road this year (better than I would expect at this stage), but has been abysmal at home, power wise.

Hoyer said the Cubs are planning on sending Caratini to Class-A Kane County and this move won't affect 2014 first-round pick Kyle Schwarber at all. Schwarber was a catcher in college, but may not stick at the position long term as his advanced bat moves quickly through the Cubs system.

"[schwarber] is obviously catching less now down in Daytona," Hoyer said. "But that's more to rest him. We feel like it's been a long season - obviously it started in January [with Indiana University].

"We'll have him do a lot of catching stuff in instructional league. So far, all his catching work with [Cubs minor league field coordinator] Tim Cossins has been excellent. We're excited where he is catching-wise. This doesn't affect him at all."

I think Caratini is a great get for Bonifacio and Russell. I'm having a hard time understanding were hoping for more.
