Well, he did get into that altercation in teh dugout with Whiteside but who cares about that guy

I don't think I heard about that?

Baez had been struggling at the plate through the first week of the season, and after striking out on a checked swing in a game Saturday he threw up his arms, leading to the ejection.

“He started out not feeling really comfortable at the plate,” Epstein said. “He let that get him frustrated, and he showed it on the field.”

And when he got to the dugout, his teammates let him know it wasn’t acceptable behavior. An argument ensued with catcher Eli Whiteside.

"I was mad, he was mad, everybody was mad," Baez told the Des Moines Register. "We argued a little. Nothing personal.”

Javy comes off cocky. I've always assumed he was with the whole, "I do whatever I want" stuff. But there has been no complaints from anyone that matters. None of his teammates have badmouthed him. No coaches. Nobody from the front office.

I think the teammates are the important one. I would never expect the front office to badmouth anyone with even a sliver of trade value. Given that Law made him out to be a monster in his chat on Friday, it's good to know that his teammates appear to enjoy him.

What did Law say?

all the Baez mentions:

Keith, First, thank you for the Top 50 update. Your work is one of the major reasons I pay for Insider access. In you evaluation of Baez you mentioned makeup concerns with lapses in concentration and effort. Any chance that this is similar to the concerns that were expressed with Hanley Ramirez in the minors and he just bored with the minors?

Klaw

I've heard about coaches having trouble with Baez, and I've had scouts/execs from other teams saying he's got some questionable off-field relationships. But I'm much more concerned about a guy who has shown a habit of taking plays and at bats off from the moment he got into the minors, and even in a nationally televised game on Sunday still couldn't bother to make a routine throw properly.

Re Baez routine throw. So is the expectation that prospects in the futures game and any other exhibition, expect for the MLB all star game, game go 100%?

Klaw

No. The expectation is that they won't go 20%.

Drew (Tokyo)

I don't understand your position on Baez. You say mostly negative things about him but rank him extremely high. Why would you have him your 8th best prospect if you think he has so many question marks?

Klaw

Praising his bat speed as the best in the minors is negative? Did you fail integer math?

Andy (Chicago)

Your whole stance on Baez feels paper thin. And your opinion of that throw feels like confirmation bias. I've seen him play countless times since he got to AA and I've never once questioned his hustle.

Klaw

Oh, a Cub fan sees what he wants to see. Film at 11.

I've seen Baez every year since his senior year of high school - when he was always last out on the field to start each inning, and wore a different cap to stand out from his teammates - and there's always been something. An at bat mailed in. A play not made, or not made correctly. A groundball not run out. Baseball's a hard game for most players. Even Manny Ramirez was a ridiculous worker when it came to hitting. (Fielding, not so much.) You don't see or hear the same concerns on Bryant or Soler or Almora.

While I'm not big on makeup, barring someone being a Milton Bradley type of distraction (which maybe you have concerns Baez could become), I find it comical that my fellow Cubs fans seem upset by your views on a player you said is the 8th best prospect in baseball despite being terrible for the first month and a half of the season.

WHY DO I HATE wait a minute that's your line

Mad that he made a lazy throw to first in the futures game (he got the runner out, but the ump blew the call.) Pretty meatball stance from Law, but I heard Baez loves Olive Garden and told keith to stick his warhammer 40k figure up his ass when law asked him to autograph it.

So, Baez has bad intangibles? Who cares? He can [expletive] hit.

And yeah, I don't see why people are upset. Law loves him as a hitter. We can all use deductive reasoning based on what we've heard about Baez and determine he's probably onto something, even if he is being to hard on Javy.

God I soooooo want Baez to become what we thought Bryce Harper would be.

Bryce Harper owns, he's just been injury prone. Don't forget how young he still is. If Baez is as good as him, we are very lucky.

i think he meant in terms of "other teams hating him because he's smug"

I could care less if he wears a different hat or he was slow getting out to the field in HS games. If he makes a lazy play here or there that is disappointing but nothing I will ever lose sleep over.

But, his insinuation that Baez wont work hard on his hitting like Manny Ramirez, Jorge Soler, Albert Almora, and Kris Bryant is a bit concerning. Is there any other evidence out there that Baez isn't a hard worker on his craft?

Given his repeated ability to adjust after failing miserably at a few levels, I'd venture to say Law is completely full of horse [expletive] on this one.

Who does this [expletive] 18 year old piece of [expletive] think he is wearing a different hat from his teammates? DOESN'T HE KNOW THERE'S NO FUN ALLOWED IN BASEBALL!?!?!?

Clearly Law has a hard-on for Baez for some reason. Maybe he's jealous of his natural abilities and thinks Baez could do more with them. [expletive] him. I've seen it before with coaches. We had a SS/C in high school (drafted in the 4 round) who was blessed with so much ability he made the rest of us look like little leaguers. The coach hated him because he made everything look easy as if he wasn't really trying. He was better than everyone else on the baseball field and he and everyone else knew it. People use to get pissed at him for his attitude, but most were just jealous, me included.
