dead player on the pitch

Right on the heels of a giant eye roll by the announcer. Awkward.....

Yeah that was funny.

Drew Magary ‏@drewmagary 1m

Oh man, Ian Darke just dumped on an unconscious guy.

Tracey Myers ‏@TramyersCSN 12s

Thought the same thing... RT @jessespector: "That is a legitimate injury. My apologies if I implied otherwise." If? IF?

My volume is down, what did he say?

yeah i like sports that have different rules.

Well ok...different is one thing...but if it happens early, it completely ruins the game. One team has no chance of winning...they turtle up and try not to lose.

That's the rule in rugby as well. And I think field hockey?

Ok. That doesn't sell me.

That strategy wouldn't work in the knockout stage, though.

There have been instances of teams a man down winning games (And even coming from behind to win after they went down a man), but generally, that's the point. Don't get a red card, especially early. This is not a hard thing to do if you aren't a complete fool.

Right, but it ruins the whole game. I mean, can you imagine watching the Bulls in the 90's and after Rodman did something stupid that got him kicked out, the bulls had to play 4 on 5 the rest of the game?

I know, the game isn't equivalent like that...but it just ruins the product. One guy out of 11 does something stupid, and the team is essentially doomed to lose (I understand there's exceptions.)

Hockey plays a man short, but it's not for the whole game. If you want to punish the team for individual's misconduct, it's a better system, IMO. It still keeps the game interesting for the fans.

What keeps the game interesting for the fans is players not being stupid and getting red cards. You're complaining about the symptom instead of the source of the problem. Where in hockey everyone knows they can take a run at anyone, anytime and not hurt the team, so they can send a 4th line goon to take out the opponent's best player for the game, and the worst that happens is his team plays a man down for 4-5 minutes and he gets suspended for 3 games he wouldn't play in anyway. In soccer, players know that if they even try to pull anything close to that, it ends their team's chances at the game.

also there's like a million guys out there and the field is enormous. playing a man down in soccer is absolutely nothing like playing 4-on-5 in basketball.

Like I said in the post, I know there's not a direct equivalency. Maybe football would be a better analogy. There's the same number of guys on the field in soccer and football. Obviously soccer still has a much larger field...especially width, but really, the point is the same. It ruins the rest of the game when a team is forced to play a man short.

If Clayton Kershaw gives up a home run in the first inning and intentionally throws at the next hitter multiple times, should he not get tossed because it will ruin the game since the Dodgers will have to use their entire bullpen to get by? They're not really playing a man short but it's just as much of a disadvantage.
