And with the slimmest of margins to compete next year, we'll almost certainly be keeping at least one prospect who can contribute in April down so we can bleed another cheap year out of him(them) because we're not serious about competing next year either.

You were trying to project that all the players who are good now will be just as good next year (they might not be) and that everyone we bring in will be average (I don't see why I should assume that, average players are hard to find).
