Also Kyle, yes, half that lineup would be the same as this year. The half that is doing really good.

And we're still 11-19. But we're going to be "drastically better" next year. Because reasons.

Well, I mean, if you do replace 4 terrible everyday players with 4 even average ones, you improve quite a bit...especially if the other 4 are pretty good.

Sure. If everyone good stays good, and everyone we bring it does no worse than average, we'll improve quite a bit.

But it never works that way, and it won't next year. Some of the guys we bring in will suck, some of the guys we thought would be good will be average or worse.

Remember all that talk you used to do about how we're bound to get positive variance at some point?

Sure. I'm not saying we won't be better next year. I'm saying we probably won't be enough better.

Did I miss the 60M we have to spend on FAs next season? And with the slimmest of margins to compete next year, we'll almost certainly be keeping at least one prospect who can contribute in April down so we can bleed another cheap year out of him(them) because we're not serious about competing next year either.

Why are people acting like Kyle is Erik in 2008, this has been a [expletive] team for awhile, and they'll probably still be [expletive] next year, but negativity is not allowed?

The payroll for the listed players is something like $50m, but you'll probably have some really funny #PoorTomRicketts jokes.

So it's your belief that next year we'll decide to have our highest payroll since PTR austerity measures began following what will probably be our lowest revenue generating year in that timeframe.

But you're talking about variance screwing up my example. There might be positive variance instead of the negative variance you're assuming.

That's not variance. That's projecting.

You were trying to project that all the players who are good now will be just as good next year (they might not be) and that everyone we bring in will be average (I don't see why I should assume that, average players are hard to find).

You take one half of the argument and pretend that's the only part. Then when the other half is pointed out, you pretend that's the only part. You put so much effort into being such a sad little man.

What "argument"?

Your argument was "guys we have some good players now and also we have some prospects!!"

The analysis was so terrible that it doesn't really rise to the level of "argument" for me to respond to.

Last thing, no one should be told how they should feel about this team. It's not rational nor controllable, it's emotional.

If it doesn't piss you off to see the Cubs play shitty baseball, good for you.

No one is complaining about the negativity here, more the irrational and hyperbolic posts from Kyle and Andy. There are legitimate gripes with this organization that you, goony and many others have posted.

There were hyperbolic posts in this thread, but it wasn't coming from me. It was coming from folks like bukie.

Heck, I hadn't even jumped in until he brought my name into it out of nowhere.

My post said that it [expletive] sucks the highlight of our season is going to be a 2 out of 3 series from STL. That may or may not be correct (and I sure hope it's not), but there was another post on that same page saying to cut Schierholtz for a Make-A-Wish kid. Irrationality and hyperbole tend to find their way into the game thread.

Then bukie started calling me a damned moron and a thickhead, and away we went.

I called you out for histrionics (again) because it's tired and stupid. I used Kyle as the "gold standard" for useless thick-headedness, and he mistakenly took that to mean that he was somehow relevant to the discussion.

I find those sorts of personal attacks inappropriate.

That's just because you think anyone who dares find anything positive about the organization means they approve of every last thing, and refuse to acknowledge otherwise.

I just like that we finally reached the point that you actually have people saying that others can't enjoy it when the Cubs are good again because they've been too negative. I guess it was inevitable, but still pretty hilarious.

Of course that's an idiotic misrepresentation of the truth, but that's what makes an apologist an apologist.
