i've seen either theo or jed make the argument that a manager's tactical decisions being bad don't hurt you that much in the long run so if they make your players better (who knows how you figure that) and happier, that's more important. or something. i cant remember when or where i read it. i think this was part of the reason they liked francona so much.

This should be a lesson for Rick.

Somewhere in baseball heaven Earl Weaver is smiling.

I think Francona is a great manager though. How much does he bunt?

That makes up for about two games' worth of pitch-framing.

He's excellent defensively. I get that his pitch framing has been bad, but someone needs to explain to me how 7 strikes equals a run because I really am in the dark when it comes to this.

The first thing you have to understand is that every ball not in the dirt or over the batters' head is Castillo's fault.

Yeah, to a point, but when the decisions are as bad as they've been tonight it's a problem. Now, if he fixes Castro, that gives him a pretty long rope.

that probably depends on his roster construction

that said, i read his book, and he actively and admittedly resisted a lot of what management/ownership wanted him to do that the numbers said he should do.

I'm either completely lost or you're making a joke about Veras. [expletive] it, I'm lost.

If we win tomorrow we're tied with the Cardinals.

If Villanueva beats Wainwright we should be awarded 2 more games in the standings for degree of difficulty or something.
