Shark is sort of a prima donna, isn't he?

At the same time this is probably the last time he will be able cash in on a big contract. I can see him being a late sign when he hits FA if he's demanding ace money.

He's a primadonna because he doesn't want to accept less money than he's worth?

He's a primadonna because he thinks he worth more than he can get. Many not the right descriptor for him, but he seems to have an inflated sense of worth. I'm not saying I blame him.

He thinks he's worth more than the Cubs are offering, not necessarily what he can get. I'm sure he could get what he wants on the open market. And since he already has "set for life" money there is no motivation to sign early. Plus, he plays for a terrible team that looks to remain terrible for a while, which is even less incentive to sign for anything shy of market value.

It's pretty easy to see the discrepancy here. Cubs are offering money based on what he'd get if he went to arb, Shark wants money as if he's a FA during those 2 arb years(now 1) because he wants something in return for signing with a non contender. No ones likely low balling or asking for too much. Easy to see both sides.

Yeah I can see both sides here. There is no reason to get upset at or talk trash about Smardzija here. I'd like to keep him long term, but have come to expect they likely will trade him.

I guess if we get down to one's definition of "competitive", but I see that meaning playing meaningful games into August, or within 5 games of the last WC. IMO, we are there next year. If the Cubs lose 90 games next year, I'm not drinking the Kool Aid anymore.

If the Cubs lose 90 next year (and assuming the same this year), it's hasta la vista baby for Renteria.

I really don't think it's that hard to imagine us sucking next year if we trade Samardzija.

They'll replace him with Masterson, in my opinion. That basically would take up Soriano's money that comes off the books and what Shark is making this year.

If I were in charge I'd say sign the contract now or:

1) You go to the bullpen and pitch as a LOOGY

2) You get sent to Iowa with Dusty Baker as your pitching coach

3) In 2 years Cubs offer you a 1 year deal for whatever the amount is so that there's a draft pick forfeited when Shark signs somewhere else as a free agent.

Thank you for that bad joke.

haven't we learned the "well, we'll just wait to sign free agent X" strategy never works and is terrible?

I vote the rays send us a bunch of guys for shark now

I would love to be a fly on the wall for those negotiations.

The Cubs would start by demanding a younger, better player than Samardzija plus four more prospects, and the Rays would offer us Hak-Ju Lee for Samardzija and Baez.

Eventually they'd meet in the middle, but it'd take awhile.

I don't get it.

If it's not some kind of joke, isn't the Rays system kinda shitty?

If it's not some kind of joke, isn't the Rays system kinda [expletive]?

Cobb is out 4-6 weeks to go with the Moore possibly needing TJS and Hellickson still on the DL after elbow surgery.

The Rays aren't going to trade for Shark, but if they're going to be ravaged by injury, that's more potential room for the Jays to see a window of opportunity and decide to pull the trigger on Shark's price tag.

Macier Izturis may miss the rest of the season. Levine has mentioned he could see a trade this month happening. Cubs appear to want at least Sanchez, Stroman, and Jimenez(fairly solid C prospect) for Shark and Barney.

Personally, if that offer was on the table and its clear an extension isn't happening, I'd pull the trigger. Can't see much more than that being out there.

I don't know if anyone else heard Shark in studio on the DP show this morning, but he was pretty good.

Highlights:

-He admitted to pitching with hangovers early in his career. "Giving millions to a 22 year old in Chicago? WTH were they thinking?"

-He actually sounded genuine in saying he wanted to spend his entire career in Chicago and respects them as the organization who helped him choose baseball.

-Almost the next breath, he said he's sick of losing and that he wants to see an effort to win every season, and he knows he only has a window of being at his peak.

-Dan Patrick ended the interview by saying that Shark will be traded this season. Shark did not correct him.

What do we make of the fact that Sanchez is really bad at throwing strikes, and at his highest two levels has a sub-8 K/9? He's a fine prospect but all indications are that he'll be valued like he's an elite prospect that's actually gotten hitters out, which I don't really have much interest in.

It's a lot easier to avoid hangovers when you only pitch once every 5 days.

You're not wrong, but it's funny saying stuff like that when we're looking to deal Samardzija for him.

Honestly, I like Stroman more myself. But lots say that Sanchez hasn't tapped fully into his potential yet either. Is it his release point? I'm not remembering right now what it is that supposedly needs a bit of cleaning up.

That said, it doesn't look like Arizona is going to be buying. They look awful. So my hopes of KT throwing Bradley our way has already basically evaporated. Taillon is already hurt. KC maybe? Seems like Ventura has too much buzz for them to trade him and Zimmer has more warts than either of Sanchez or Stroman to me. Would the Mets part with Syndergaard and Montero? Seems unlikely to me anyway. Who else is left? That has legit pitching prospects? I mean, we COULD trade for hitting, but we HAVE to acquire some young pitching at some point soon.

Law was concerned that the Jays were tinkering with his delivery and increased his injury risk as a result.
