btw - in reminding myself about the exact draft order this year I also got reminded that three of the teams in the NL central get competitive balance picks this year. StL and MIL both get picks in the 1st supplemental and Cincy gets a 2nd supplemental pick this year.

So stupid.

I bet any of them would trade one of those picks for Soler.

@jimcallisMLB: Talked to scout yesterday who preferred TJ'd Hoffman to TJ'd Matuella b/c much more track record/no back issues on Hoff. @MLBDraft @BlueJays

@jimcallisMLB: Might be last pick this high in a while, so could gamble. @cody_schrader: If Aiken falls to @Cubs ... No. 1 on their board last yr @MLBDraft

Assuming Cubs doctors feel okay enough to draft him (and okay enough doesn't necessarily mean they feel great ... ), I'd be fine with that gamble. A long way to go, but I look at how the Nats have taken gambles that have kept their system strong despite so many graduations and I'm comfortable with going that route ... assuming Aiken doesn't ask for some ridiculous amount.

I agree. Moderate risk (depending on how his medical reports are), but high reward if it pays off. If the medicals check out and there isn't a player there who the Cubs like better, I'm not letting his injury or the simple fact that he's a pitcher scare me off.

@kileymcd: Kirby looks tired in 4th and 5th, working 88-91, stuff is average and command is below. This is why the 2015 draft can't have nice things.

@CrawfordChrisV: @kileymcd Worst draft class off the high-speed internet era.

@kileymcd: Funk made some $$$ tonight MT @jesseburkhart More 93-96 and another 97 from Funkhouser in the 7th, holding command to glove side

If Funkhouser isn't there at 9, hopefully Aiken will be. Coming around on Happ as well.

@aaronfitt: Bummer for BC to lose slugger Chris Shaw for a few weeks with a broken hamate bone. He's been on a tear lately, was shooting up draft lists.

2016 1st rounder/ staff ace Cal Quantrill of Stanford is having THS.

AJ Puk, a potential top 15 pick in 2016, could get 5 years: http://deadspin.com/florida-pitchers-hit-with-felony-charges-allegedly-cli-1697468369

And now, South Carolina ace Wil Crowe needs TJS. He's another potential 2016 top 15 pick.

The 2016 draft is way more loaded than the crappy 2015 one, but I'm not sure how many potential first rounders it can handle losing/diminishing their stock.

Nathan Kirby was just pulled after 3 strong innings for Virginia. I guess a couple of days had been too long since the last highly regarded amateur pitcher had gotten hurt.

Yeah, the suspicion seems to be that he's been dinged up for awhile. I wouldn't be surprised if they gave him an extended break (then again, with UVA borderline to reach the post-season ... although it was a good win with Miami and the lineup is as close to full strength as we'll have for this season (LaPrise isn't making it back). We'll have to see next time out if it's anything serious. Early this year, he was looking real good.

@kileymcd: The #2 prospect in the draft, UC Santa Barbara righty Dillon Tate, has been scratched from his start this weekend. Sounds like lat strain.

@BaseballAmerica: Can confirm UCSB righthander Dillon Tate, who has been rocketing up drafts boards, will not start Sunday.

Damn ... I finally got to trying to read up a lot more on this draft class ... and I can't think of anyone I really want at our pick. I'm leaning towards a save money for later move. I'm actually fine with drafting an arm ... but the problem is, it sure feels like there will be some arms that fall down a bit in the draft and could be available in the 2nd. Now, you don't pass up someone because someone might be there, but no one stands out.

I have never been huge on Swanson or Bregman. I think Swanson is fine, but I just feel like he's a bit over-hyped. I guess I sort of think Lindor with him, a guy I like but don't really love. I guess I'm fine if they gamble on Daz Cameron or Kyle Tucker ... but a part of me really likes Cornelius Griffin.

Sure feels like this could be a draft where some late risers change the complexion ... or several teams may rate some guys higher than others. In some respects, makes it a more interesting draft, but geesh ... if there was a year where I wished we could trade a top 10 pick ... this would be it.

Every time I see this thread bumped I just assume another pitcher got hurt, so it's nice to see it just be an article

Pacific OF Gio Brusa is out 4-8 weeks with an elbow injury.

Kirby expected out 6-8 weeks.

Trent Clark also is about to be part of baseball history too. Clark is expected to be among the first 20 players selected in the June draft by Major League Baseball. He’s been scouted by many, including Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein for Tuesday’s night home game against Euless Trinity.

Not that you should ever draft for major league need, but are there any college pitchers who project/could potentially be up in July/August after the draft for bullpen help?
Posted
I know it isn't normally a good strategy, but I wouldn't mind if they drafted Kyler Murray, offered slot or less and took the pick next year when he chooses to play football instead. This draft sucks and they don't have an urgent need to get someone into the system now. The Cubs can wait a year for a probably much stronger group of talent.

Except he might very well take an offer, as he should. 5'10" successful NFL QB's aren't a common occurrence. Not to mention his uncle works for Boras. He can always go back to play college football with seven figures in his bank account if he fails. Besides he could be a Billy Hamilton who can actually hit in the big leagues.

Then, "yay!"

If you get him at slot or under, then do it. Screw pitchers and the college bats are all fairly uninspiring. If he chooses football, move on to 2016 with 2 firsts and put all the draft savings this year towards going extra craxy on IFA's in July.
