I was not expecting the rules to be like that in the Olympics. I was hoping Kane would get a shot but instead Oshie kept going (and did well no complaints)

I also hate the idea of a shoot out in the prelims. What ever happened to 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie. Ties are perfectly acceptable in hockey, I don't know why we try so hard to eliminate them. At least in the Olympics they are smart enough to make every game worth the same number of points, since they insist on adding OT and SOs

why are the same two guys shooting over and over?

because they're scoring over and over

but in the NHL, you cycle through new guys. If it goes 7 or 8 "innings", you're 3rd SO skater doesn't do innings 3-8

Agreed, it makes it even worse than the NHL shoot outs.

Not only is it not hockey, but it's also just 2 v 2. Terrible format

The overtime rules apparently change the further along we get.

Preliminary round: Five-minute, 4-on-4 overtime.

Playoff rounds (qualifications round, quarterfinals, semifinals, bronze medal): 10-minute, 4-on-4 overtime.

Gold medal game: 20-minute, 4-on-4 overtime. Teams also get a 20-minute break before the OT period and will change ends.

But shootouts rules stay the same. 3 different guys, after that, whoever you want.

Canada needs OT to defeat Finland. That means the US is the #2 seed. They said on the broadcast that they wouldn't play Canada or Russia until the gold medal game.

They've talked the big ice to death but it may wind up being Canada's undoing in the long run.

Not true, US would play Canada in the semis if both won in the quarters.

EDIT: Here is the order of overall standings:

1. Sweden, 9 pts

2. USA, 8 pts (+11)

3. Canada, 8 pts (+9)

4. Finland, 7 pts

5. Russia, 6 pts (+3)

6. Switzerland, 6 pts (+1)

7. Czech Republic, 3 pts (-1)

8. Slovenia, 3 pts (-5)

9. Austria, 3 pts (-8)

10. Slovakia, 1 pt

11. Latvia, 0 pts (-5)

12. Norway, 0 pts (-9)

So, the quarters will go like so:

1. Sweden vs 8. Slovenia-9. Austria winner

4. Finland vs 5. Russia-12. Norway winner

2. USA vs 7. Czech Republic-10. Slovakia winner

3. Canada vs 6. Switzerland-11. Latvia winner

If Canada had won in regulation, Canada would have been the 1, Sweden the 2, and USA the 3, with everything else remaining the same. As is, the US gets to face a real team in the quarters thanks to Slovakia playing like ass, then likely Canada in the semis, with whoever makes it out of Sweden/Finland/Russia in the other half of the bracket in the gold medal game.

So USA will need to probably beat Canada then Sweden to win the gold and if they lose to Canada possibly Russia just to get the bronze. Pretty tough road.

Czech Republic versus Slovakia is kind of a cool matchup in the play in round.

That sucks.

Maybe we'll get Canada while their still playing mediocre

The Swiss might save us the trouble.

When I heard them say that, I wasn't thinking that it couldn't be right because the 2 seed plays the 3 seed if they get that far

I think Russia/Finland will beat a depleted Swedish team. Sweden probably had the easiest group and were not very impressive. US ends up with a tough road.

Which is annoying because I think the US looked the most impressive in the first three games.

The Swiss DO have a stud goalie that could steal one from anybody.

Marian Hossa finally scored the Blackhawks first goal in the tournament. Unfortunately his team is down 4-1 in the 3rd and facing elimination.

He scored a second one too. Interesting to note that both goals were assisted on by Handzus

Czechs hold on to win 5-3 after an empty netter and face the US next. Switzerland lost to Latvia 3-1, further reinforcing that group C was extra weak.

Slovakia really screwed up the last 2 min of that game.
