we dicked around with lendy castillo after taking him in the rule 5 draft. at the time, it was assumed that dicking around with fake injuries was okay. it turns out that was wrong. the phillies now get our rule 5 draft pick. this is probably not a big deal since most people think we weren't going to take anyone anyway. even if we were, we could probably buy some team's pick for like $50,000.

Couldn't they have just paid him a couple grand and paid for his travels at some point in ST to do this? Instead of taking him? I understand it's really not a big deal either way, just don't get why you have to draft him to have him come in and talk.

We took a Rule 5 catcher that needs to stay on the roster that already has Castillo and Kotteras. I'm guessing this is coverage in case they decide to move Castillo in a trade this winter. Otherwise there's no way they go an entire year with three catchers on the roster.

 

 

Or a pickup to show they are interested and see if the Pirates will trade him to the Cubs so they can stash him in AAA.

I would have liked to hold onto Mateo (and maybe Morris), but we didn't really lose anything today worth getting upset over. Simply not losing Hatley and Ha is enough to keep me happy.

Looking at costs for athletes to come speak at events... this seems to be a fair rate, actually.
