A bunch of different reporters have said that one of the 40-man spots we cleared today was for James McDonald, which is odd because he got a minor-league deal supposedly.

wait, what?

Who left the 40 man today?

Raley and Marshall were both claimed on waivers.

Wasn't Marshall removed a while ago?

Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com hears that the Mariners are likely to trade Nick Franklin or Brad Miller before Opening Day.

Rubin says that Franklin is the likelier of the two to be dealt. The Mets are looking for an upgrade at shortstop and Rubin thinks that Franklin could be a fit. However, many question the soon-to-be 23-year-old's ability to hack it defensively at the position. He played 96 games at second and three at shortstop last year for the Mariners but has more minor league experience at short (261 games) than second (122 games).

I know the Cubs won't land either of them, but I would prefer either over Darwin Barney.

I would rather start Bonifacio or Valbuena at second than Barney. I'd love to have Franklin or Miller or even Ackley.

Montero shows up to Ms camp 40 pounds over weight. That's a lot of potential wasted.

Super happy I traded for him in my keeper league a couple years ago. He holds a special place on my bench.

Man, that trade ended up super crappy for both parties.

two jokes I've heard multiple times this week are that "no plate discipline" in regards to montero, and the ray rice "that's his longest carry of the season" one, never get old.

I prefer the "Leave it up to Rice to fumble after a 3 yard carry" version of that joke.

nelson cruz to the orioles

They're supposedly still in on Santana too. If they wind up getting Ubaldo, Cruz, AND Santana, they've played the comp pick stuff very well.

Once you lose the 1st rounder, I think it's best to just screw the draft that year and go for it. Don't have a superstar out of the group, but adding all 3 to a nucleus like the O's would be very, very good for them.

With extension talks still at a stalemate, the Cubs could still potentially deal top starter Jeff Samardzija before the start of the season, reports Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Two sources said that was a strong possibility, while another rejected the idea that trade talks were in progress.

It has been nearly a month since the 29-year-old's name has seen the pages of MLBTR in reference to trade chatter. While he avoided arbitration with Chicago in the interim, both player and club have given recent indication that the sides are somewhat entrenched in terms of a longer deal.

With only one premium starter (Ervin Santana) still on the market, the Rays seemingly likely to open the year with David Price in their rotation, and Homer Bailey now not even a theoretical trade candidate, an opportunity could conceivably arise to get solid value for Samardzija. Surely, the likelihood of a deal would rise if the team does not believe it can get him to sign a new deal at a palatable price, though a mid-season move might still be a preferable strategy. Fueling the sense that a trade could still be in the works, says Wittenmyer, is the fact that manager Rick Renteria has declined to name Samardzija the Opening Day starter, saying that "so many things can happen over the course of the spring that I'm not going to lock myself in[]."

A source tells USA Today's Bob Nightengale that the Angels and outfielder Mike Trout are negotiating a six-year contract extension worth around $140 million.

The prospective deal would keep Trout with the Angels through the 2020 season. Talks of a long-term extension have been reported in recent days, and with Trout's new $1 million salary for 2014 out of the way the two sides can focus on hammering something out. Previous reports from Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan had the deal in the seven-year, $150-160 million range, but either way, it seems like only a matter of time before the two sides agree on a deal that will pay the 22-year-old a whole lot of money.

Looking at about $23-$25 million a year. Good deal for the Angels. It's crazy that if he keeps doing what he's doing, he'll be vastly underpaid for his performance at that rate.

http://www.bleachernation.com/2014/02/27/rumor-teams-checking-in-on-darwin-barney/

To that point, George King has reported that the Yankees – who at one time had interest in Barney – are looking to improve their infield depth, and may use their catching surplus to do it. GM Brian Cashman said that, if the Yankees do add in the infield, they’ll look to do it on the cheap. As far as Barney goes, and the Cubs’ catching needs go, that’s a check, check, check.

Unsurprisingly, then, Bruce Levine reports that teams have continued to inquire about Barney this offseason, even as recently as last week when the other New York team – the Mets – checked in. That kind of checking in is probably going to continue throughout Spring Training. Given the Yankees’ situation just described, I’d be surprised if there weren’t more discussions there at some point.
