Some twitter rumblings that the Rangers and A's might be close to a deal, possibly Gentry for Anderson.

Isn't it Gentry for Michael Choice?

You're right. Anderson still available...

The A's have acquired outfielder Craig Gentry from the Rangers in exchange for Michael Choice, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). Other players are involved in the deal as well, adds Passan.

Gentry, who turned 30 last week, is regarded as one of the game's best defensive outfielders and is coming off a season in which he batted .280/.373/.386 with a pair of homers and 24 stolen bases in 27 attempts. He boasts an outstanding 29.5 UZR/150 in more than 1400 career innings in center field, and The Fielding Bible likes him for +34 runs saved in his career.

Gentry has thrived against left-handed pitching throughout his career, compiling a solid .288/.376/.399 slash line. He's serviceable against right-handed pitchers as well, though his OBP (.334) and slugging (.335) are significantly lower against same-handed pitching.

Cubs have inquired about Texas OF Craig Gentry's availability. Cubs envision him as having a good right-handed bat and playing decent defense to man CF or RF in a platoon role. No details given to me on what the Rangers asked for in return.

I am told the Cubs were in on him right to the end. Oakland gave up more than what the Cubs thought he was worth.

Yeah, Michael Choice is a fairly nice get for Gentry.

Cubs' FO thrives on drawing hard lines on players and slapping themselves on the back for coming in second on them. I'll leave it to others to decide if that's a good or bad thing.

So envious of all the moves the As are making. I'm going to end up going full meatball if nothing of note is done over this offseason.

We used to wish we had a front office as smart as the A's', and now we have it. Now we get to wish we had as much financial power as them.

So scouting/value wise does Choice seem to have about the same value as Vogelbach or Candelario? Or are those guys in another class from choice? Is he closer to Villanueva?

He spent most of last year at AAA, so I don't think a comp to Vogelbach or Candelario fits at all. He plays lots of positions but none of them well. Seemed to be in disfavor with Oakland.

Think Brett Jackson sometime in 2011 or 2012.

Assuming no crazy backloading that'd likely put the Royals over 100M for the first time ever.

I think they'll middle load it, which would coincide with James Shields contract off the books, and before the young players get more expensive.

Yow

Yeah, that's totally crazybuckets. LOLRoyals

Not sure why it's funny... but the Royals needed a bat.

I can't deny that he technically is a bat.

I know that the contract, combined with his age, will suck for the Royals in 2016, but if they get Beltran, it tells me that they're all-in for the 2014 season to make it into the playoffs.

Plus, he'll be playing in the AL, which he can play some DH, give Butler a day off, or send Butler out at 1st, to give Hosmer a day off.

There's some flexibility there. Just glad the Royals finally got rid of Chris Getz. A year too late.....

For $16m immediately, I'd like to think you can do better for 2014 than Carlos Beltran. Could be wrong, though.

Perhaps, but the Royals needed a RF, 2nd Basemen (this one still need addressed, I'm not sold on Bonifacio), and a starting pitcher (who they got Vargas).

They're banking on the hope that Moose and Butler's numbers would be improved in 2014. Butler, I could see that, but I have my doubts on Moose.....

Sounds like the Mariners are making a big push, if the rumors are true...

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Mariners "have been among the most aggressive suitors" for Matt Kemp.

Morosi notes that the M's are also looking at free agents as they attempt to upgrade their outfield. The Dodgers are shopping all of their outfielders not named Yasiel Puig, and they surely wouldn't mind getting out from under what remains of Kemp's $160 million contract. They'd likely have to eat a chunk of Kemp's deal in order to make something happen.

Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York reports that the Mariners have emerged as a "major player" in negotiations with Robinson Cano.

Wallace was told by one source familiar with the negotiations that the Yankees believe that the offense-starved Mariners might be willing to offer eight years and $200 million to lure Cano to Seattle. This is the first time we have heard of legitimate interest from another club, though the timing is somewhat dubious after it was reported Monday that the Yankees weren't going to give him $200 million. We're skeptical that the Mariners are a legitimate threat here, as they have failed in previous efforts to sign hitters, but one industry source pegs the Yankees' chances of retaining Cano at "less than 50-50."
