If the East didn't blow I'd say who knows if the Bulls even make the playoffs Admirable that the Bulls were able to claw together 45 wins without Rose last year but to do it again with even less offensive talent might be tough for this team to do.

I think 33-35 wins could get the 8 seed this year and probably 37-40 gets the 7 seed.

But this year has ~10 teams actively trying to lose, whereas most teams tried last season.

@chicagobulls: Earlier this morning, Derrick Rose underwent successful surgery to repair his previously torn medial meniscus in his right knee... (cont.)

@chicagobulls: (cont.) ... The surgery was performed at Rush University Medical Center and Rose is out for the remainder of the season.

Damn...D-Rose expected to be out 6 months. Keeps getting worse

was there a thought he wasn't out for the year?

Yes, but in retrospect it was probably just wishful thinking.

Keep Rose, Butler, Gibson, and Noah. Dump everyone else and let's hit the lottery. Should be plenty of talent in next year's draft.

The Bulls won't do that, and in any case, the NBA already rigged one lottery for them, they're not going to do it again.

If that were the case, the NBA can hook the Bulls up with a second Chicagoan in Parker.

I say trade Noah too. I have a major man crush on him but he can't stay healthy and even with his contract he probably gets us the most in return out of any asset. I'm all for replacing the entire core sans Butler and whats left of Rose.

Build around:

Butler

Mirotic

Charlotte pick (hoping we get it this year)

Bulls 1st (should be around 15-20)

Return for Noah

Return for Deng

Rose

There is a crapload of unknowns there, but I think the Bulls would be in a position with the right amount of luck (mostly whether Mirotic turns out and whether we can get a minor star from one of the 1sts this year) to have a solid team again and hopefully one thats not injury prone besides Rose.

I'm not sure it's worth trading Noah given his unique skill set and the general fact that most NBA trades seem lopsided in favor of the team getting the veteran talent. You pretty much have to trade Deng because he won't return next year.

Unless the Bulls hit a home run on one of those picks or Mirotic, that's not a good core.

That's the point, I'm high on Mirotic. It's a bit of a gamble but this is the deepest draft in years and GarPax has shown to be more than capable of finding talent in the draft.

Plus depending on the contacts you get back for Deng/Noah/Gibson, you would probably have financial flexibility to acquire a star player to go along with that core.

Oh we could keep plugging Noah in there praying that he isn't limited for the playoffs (which I think he has been 4 of the last 5 years). Noah for a contract matching expiring and a mid 1st rounder would be good enough for me. I think a top 15 pick in this draft is like a top 7-8 pick in most drafts.

I'm open to trading anyone not named Rose, but realistically I'm not going to force any deals, even Deng, unless the value is fair. Even in our state, we can make a decent two round run in the playoffs and rack up a few extra games of playoff revenue. And I know it shouldn't be a big deal, but with us being a tax paying team now, I want any additional revenue we can.

Unless you're willing to fire Thibs, we just can't be bad enough to make a meaningful tank.

Given this latest Rose injury, I just don't see a way the team pays the tax next year. JR is not going to get the repeater penalty with so many questions surrounding Rose.

I am wondering, does amnestying Boozer and bringing Mirotic over while keeping Deng keep us in the tax? (assume you don't resign Hinrich)? How much worse of a team does that make us? That would be the most logical route I see the Bulls taking if they are dead set on being conservative like always.

Oh even with a healthy Rose I think there was a high chance we don't pay the tax, just because of repeater issues, but as far as total outlays go, I'm thinking of things like the Boozer amnesty and whether they actually would try to use saved tax money or say, "well we're still paying Boozer, so we can't use the MLE or make this trade." Stuff like that.

They would likely be able to stay under the luxury cap in that situation. Guessing Deng gets $11-13 (AAV) on his next deal which would put them around $61 million next year. What kind of contract does Mirotic get (rookie scale?) if it's a rookie deal they should be able to stay below the $71 mil number for lux tax by bringing guys in on minimums and using their mini/mid exceptions.
