This is why I don't watch their playoff (or any) games. Much easier to remain detached when I don't see what new ridiculous way STL finds to be awarded a win as it happens.

From my facebook feed: 2 fan bases, 2 different perspectives:

Cardinals:

Did you watch the replay? He totally stuck BOTH legs up and tripped Craig

Red Sox:

Especially since you can watch Craig go out of his way to trip over Middlebrooks there. The base path was clear down the line. Total BS call.

the longer the cubs suck, the more i realize that baseball is kind of a crappy sport.

Didn't it look like Craig was nowhere near the baseline when he tripped? Does that matter?

I'm not a student of the rule book, but it doesn't sound like it does.

So, in that exact situation, is Middlebrooks just [expletive]? What the hell is he supposed to do?

Yell at saltalamacchi to not even attempt that idiotic throw

Absolute [expletive] call... Thank god we don't live in a flyover worthless state!!!

Yeah, I'm not familiar with the exact rule(and therefore what the correct call is), but it seems like we shouldn't reward Craig for taking the most indirect and inconvenient route possible to start towards home plate.

sorry middlebrooks, by virtue of existing you have cost your team the game

The fielder has plenty of room to get out of the way of the runner.

Or one could blame the terrible throw to 3rd by Saltalamacchia.

@DaveCameronFG This play establishes a fun precedent. If you're a runner, and you see a fielder dive for a ball, immediately go trip over him on purpose.

Disappointed that a Cubs board isn't meatballing out about a call that benefitted the Cards?

the "letter of the law" is so hysterically vague that you absolutely do not make that call in that moment.

nevermind the fact that the ump that made the call isn't even looking at the play as craig trips over his own feet. Just horse [expletive] all the way around.

They got the call right. Middlebrooks pretty clearly stuck his legs back in the air in an attempt to block Craig from scoring. And he really didn't have a choice. If he just lets Craig run, Craig scores easily. So he tried to block him in the hope that the umpire wouldn't see.

if you look at the gif, joyce obviously saw the obstruction, you even see him call it as it happens
