Hughes would be a nice pick up on a minor league deal, but I don't see that happening.

We have Arrieta, Grimm, Vizcaino, Cabrera, Bard, Hendricks, Villanueva, Rusin, Loux and whomever we can pick up on minor league deals with invites to compete for 2 rotation spots and round out the depth chart.

No reason to give someone else's castoff any kind of big league money, with the supposed financial situation in mind.

why, because 27 year old pitchers with good stuff who have been close to league average for most of their career never get signed to league minimum non-guaranteed deals?

No way Bard is going back into a rotation.

i've cooled on Hughes after realizing how badly his stuff has diminished- i'd previously thought he was being unusually victimized by his home park (still true, to an extent), but he's probably just very hittable now

Josh Johnson with a Carpenter-esque 1y/$5m + $20m team bonus or

Lincecum on Liriano's original terms

...seem like better value bets to me

Hughes on a minor league deal and Sweeney at 3/15.....Complicated thought process, maybe Murphy on a 10 year, 12.75 mill deal, to lock up a bench spot long term? Or does it take him too far out of his prime? Would he even sign it? Risking his prime earning years in the process? Tough decisions abound at this stage of the rebuild, that's for certain! Josh Johnson is my #1 fa pitching target. But I think Hughes would be a decent get as well, has his stuff really diminished? His BABIP is higher than his career average and his velo this year is right in line with his career averages. Looks like he has hrown his slider a lot more (23.6% this year, compared to 6% for his career) than his curveball (8.6% this year to 17.4% for career). Also he's completely given up throwing his cutter.

Haha, you don't usually get in on the action. I like it.

It happens. And if he was willing to take such a deal, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

I'm not saying that we have a set rotation. I'd love to see Vizcaino and Arrieta have first crack at the 2 open spots, and even if they look like aces in Spring Training, both are guys we'd need a break glass in case of emergency backup for.

What I am saying is that if we do seek rotation help that we either aim big, such as Price or dig into the reclamation bin for guys that would take a deal like that.

Hughes on something like what Liriano got last year before breaking his arm and taking a 1 year deal is something I wouldn't mind. Think it was like 2 years and $15 million guaranteed +/-.

Also there's probably near zero chance Vizcaino is ready to take one of 5 starting spots out of ST. Meaning he's probably going to be on a innings limit and they will want him to rebuild his strength in the minors at least to start the year.

Personally, I think he should just focus on being the future relief ace.

On a separate but related note...the pitching in the upper minors is going to be really fun next year. All these guys should be at AA or higher to start the year:

Pierce Johnson

Ivan Pineyro

CJ Edwards

Corey Black

Ben Wells

Kyle Hendricks

Neil Ramirez

Justin Grimm (majors?)

Chris Rusin (majors?)

Eric Jokisch

Arodys Vizcaino

That has to easily be the most talent we've had in the AA and AAA rotations in a long time. I can honestly see any of those 10 guys being in Chicago by the end of the year, depending on circumstance.

(for reference, here's my guess at mlb)

shark

acquisition

wood

jackson

arrieta (bullpen if beaten out by Rusin/Grimm/etc.)

Cubs just claimed Matt Gamel. Can't hurt to give him a look.

That's an interesting pick up. Don't really see where there is room for him on the team (if he actually pans out which is no sure thing). But he's blocked at 1st, worse than Braun defensively at 3B, and we have two better LH OF options.
