I'm pretty sure the whole "it's been X amount of time so let's check in on outdated stories X, Y and Z" is a beyond-overplayed joke. So it's no surprise whatsoever that Rick Reilly would use it.

Whoa, was not expecting that to actually be the guy from MTV.

Connelly wrote for Rolling Stone for years.

ESPN has been bleeding viewership and has the big NBA rights nut coming up @ $1B+. They pay the Big 10 $100M for football/basketball and they'll lose them soon. But they keep Berman, Kenny Mayne, the droning Vitale, the abysmal 'His and Hers' and flogging us with the cheating Valvano programming. YIKES.

Bill Simmons is getting an HBO show.

And doing video podcasts for them. Nothing about writing, so presuming he does do that it will be elsewhere (or more likely on his own).

I think/hope the podcasts will be released in audio form - they did a lot of video podcasting on Grantland, too.

As for the writing, looks like there's more to come.

Phew, OK I take it back Bill.

His writing quality has gone down the last few years, but I still enjoy reading some of the articles, especially his Friday NFL ones even if his opinion is wrong half the time. Also love the Cousin Sal betting lines podcasts, so was really hoping he would keep them going.

Simmons is also going to be involved in producing some documentaries, seeing how he was involved in the 30 For 30s (or at least bringing them back) I have some hope there he'll do some similar things at HBO. If he's just going to mostly a TV/Talk Show format I'll follow him very little. He was terrible on TV for ABC/NBA.

Len Kasper...I mean 'Anonymous MLB Announcer" wrote a letter for Boers and Bernstein's 'Who you crappin' segment. It further confirms that Len Kasper is awesome.

This crap is from "Anonymous MLB Broadcaster", and it goes out to all the baseball fans who believe that announcers jinx no-hitters.

There is a crazy belief that what people with microphones, hundreds of feet from the action, say to their viewing and listening audience far from the action, have a direct impact on what actually happens on the field of play. The typical scenario goes like this, a starting pitcher no-hits the opposition 5 innings, that teams announcer then says, “Pitcher X has a no-hitter through 5,” you know, because that’s what’s taking place. It would be the equivalent of one team leading 3-2 through 7 innings, at which point the broadcaster would likely utter, “Team X leads Team Y 3-2.” So once pitcher X gives up a hit in the 6th inning or later, that team’s fans don’t get upset at Mr. X; no, they save their vitriol for the evil broadcaster who dared tell them earlier that the other team didn’t have a hit. Or as we like to call it in the Biz, “doing his job.”

Vin Scully, the greatest broadcaster who has ever lived, has called 19 no-hitters in his career. 19. And during each one, he specifically alerted the audience to what was taking place, or as we like to say in the Biz, “he was doing his job.”

You see, not every viewer or listener is on twitter, or watches or hears every inning, let alone every pitch. Some fans need to be told, very specifically, what is happening. Yet just like clockwork, any time a pitcher gives up his first hit after the 5th inning, you can easily find hundreds of vitriolic posts on twitter calling that team’s broadcaster a “horrible person for jinxing it.”

So for all the jinx believers I’m gonna play your game, OK? So here’s the deal. I am a jinx. You are absolutely right about me. And listen to me very closely. You are 100% safe from being anally probed in your sleep tonight by an invisible space invader from the Andromeda galaxy, got it? Good.

So to the fans who are convinced we play-by-play guys control the universe, I hope you sleep well tonight. And who you crappin?"

colin cowherd sacked by espn, a week before he was scheduled to leave. he will not be missed.

http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/13314040/colin-cowherd-no-longer-espn-air-comments-dominican-republic-players

The flap stems from Cowherd's comments on Thursday, which were made while debating whether it was difficult for a front-office executive to take over managerial duties -- using current Miami Marlins general manager/manager Dan Jennings as an example.

"It's baseball," Cowherd said Thursday. "You don't think a general manager can manage? Like it's impossible? The game is too complex? I've never bought into that, 'Baseball's just too complex.' Really? A third of the sport is from the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has not been known in my lifetime as having world-class academic abilities. A lot of those kids come from rough backgrounds and have not had opportunities academically that other kids from other countries have.
