This is fun. Just wait until Theo and Jed move Castro for prospects at the winter meetings.

Yep, that's what they're gonna do alright. I mean his value is so high right now.

You'd be surprised at that? I mean I'm sure we will get a major league ready player as well, but if they move Castro, prospects will be involved.

I'd be shocked. Not that they'd move him, but that's they'd do it this offseason. At this point lots of variables are too, well, variable. If late in the 2014 season Baez has been brought up and is hitting, Bryant is still raking and moving up the ranks...then it makes more sense.

Plus Castro's value is perhaps at its low point.

I realize it's "pinching pennies," but between this deal and the Soriano deal, how much 2014 money have we now knocked off the books for this upcoming offseason?

Technically 6.5 million, 11.5 million if you think DeJesus' option would be picked up no matter what.

$6.5 million.

i'd rather they win 92 games next year, personally.

Well dejesus isnt a 12 win player. I doubt the FO is looking at 2014 as a year where they expect to win over 85 or so games. They're probably looking at 2014 as a nice step to average before hoping to take the leap into contention in 2015.

That's looking like it could be a pretty huge leap.

At some point they need to start adding players that they think can stick around and fill holes for the future. Bargain hunting and dumpster diving for another year and then expecting all the top prospects to hit their potential and acquiring (trades or FAs) stars in 2015 to turn into a 90 win team isn't very realistic.

The dumpster diving routine is getting pretty old. I, like many posters, realize that this happens to be the Chicago Cubs, not the Royals, Marlins, Pirates or other small market teams. The fact the new regime (Tom Ricketts) is setting us up for year three of this is not something that should be tolerated by three million fans again.

Cubs fans are going to really need to stay away if this is what we have to endure again next year. Theo and Jedd are great, but if they're being hamstrung by payroll limitations, they can't do what they need to do here.

No [expletive]. But there's basically no way that happens regardless, unless damn near everything breaks really right.

Well, unless some teams get really generous in trade negotiations with the Cubs. I really don't think losing DeJesus has any tangible effect on next year's outcome in any case.

Two good free agent signings, bounceback years from the core, hit on some of the interesting bullpen guys. That's all it would take.

i've been about the most understanding of their plan so far, but i don't agree with giving dejesus away to save money. will we have 3 outfielders better than dejesus next year? probably not. did everybody in this thread suddenly give up on next year?

Higher than it will be if he can't hit next year, too.

If we don't end up fielding three equal or better outfielders, then I'll look back and be annoyed by it. But I'm not worried about that just yet.

DeJesus is 1.5 WAR player. Whether or not we contend next year is almost certainly not going to be affected by this. The best available FA are OF, if we don't sign at least one of them it doesn't matter, if we do the DeJesus' trade becomes completely irrelevant.

that makes no sense. even with a 100-110 million payroll, the cubs have tons of money to spend. this is still baseball and there are 2 wild cards, you can still go from trash to good in one offseason while other teams go to [expletive].

by your logic, what's the point of any team ever signing a 1.5 WAR free agent? or what's the point in the cubs signing anybody this offseason? 1-2 wins could be huge. it could decide a postseason spot.

mostly, he makes the team better and i think we should try to make the team good

His production is easily replaced. A Lake/Sweeney platoon would likely be cheaper and potentially more productive. If they plan on signing an OF this offseason, then DeJesus would be an extraneous piece.

Final judgement on this should be withheld until we see what happens this offseason, but DeJesus isn't a guy who you look at and say "where are we going to recoup the production from?" either way.

You're already past the point of no return in terms of getting any kind of return you SHOULD get for Castro; at this point you have to just hold on and pray that he bounces back.

RT @ckamka So with DeJesus going to Nationals, the current #Cubs player with the most career home runs is now Dioner Navarro with 51.

that's got to be some sort of record

I bet the Astros are right there since they've gotten rid of Pena.

If DeJesus is a 1.5 win player, then we saved $2.5m in cash for a player who is projected to be about a $2.5m in surplus value. Just sayin'.

you're the guy who can't stand the $/WAR, especially when used for lower value players, correct?

I hate the fact we've not heard a single mention of whats coming back. Which does make it sound financially driven. This isn't on Theo and Jed, its purely on our owner. Hopefully our thoughts will be proven wrong over the offseason, but I doubt it.

No, but he was a guy you could count on pretty reliably, and the Cubs can actually use guys like that. Again, he's not making or breaking the team, but he was a reliable player who didn't cost a lot, wasn't blocking anyone and now you're potentially left hoping that Lake can be as serviceable if they aren't out there looking to spend.

Again, it's less DeJesus himself and more what this trade possibly represents.

Mostly. It's overused and misread a lot.

I wasn't meaning that to be a deeply meaningful point. Just a cute coincidence.
