Sano's BP was insane, but Alcantara's was also legit, showing impressive bat speed and pop. #Cubs

Arrieta dealing through 5: 1 H, 1 BB, 8 K.

This is very encouraging. I'm really hoping that untapped talent comes to fruition.

Unless the Cubs get a major league ready arm in the deal I assume the plan is for Arrieta to be first in line for Garza's spot when he is traded.

I think that depends on Baker's rehab progress.

Not like it comes as any surprise, but given today's outing, I'm guessing Baker will need time.

3 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR

FWIW, all the runs came in the 1st, so hopefully he got that out of his system.

Some rust should be expected it's been a while since he's been pitching in games. At least there weren't a ton of walks.

I don't know what kind of stuff Baker had before TJS, but he was getting hit hard all 3 innings. The outs were very solid contact as well. He did work generally 87-91, with his offspeed stuff in the low 80s, and he carried the velocity for all 3 innings. I'm guessing he will need several more outings just to get his feel back.

I didn't take as detailed notes today, as the sun was intense and I couldn't see the iPad screen. But, if there's anyone of interest outside Baker, ask away.

Plus I would care more about what his stuff looked like than actual results. Especially in a first rehab start after an extremely long time. He's probably focused on throwing x amount of a given pitch and not trying to carve guys up.

For a first rehab start, not leaving with a setback is a success. Stuff can come later.

That too.

Pretty much what I've heard about these early rehab outtings. It's essentially a sim game vs. guys who are actually trying to beat you.

Baker didn't throw a ton of offspeed, and the big 2 run homer he gave up was on a get me over 3-0 fastball if that makes anyone feel better.
