Great news.....Hopefully this doesn't cost us Clifton.

I don't see how it's great news. It's bad news, if true, because I expect him to sign and to sign for less than that.

The Cubs can offer $440,924.99 to any one draft pick ($100,000 allowable plus $340,924.99 they currently have to spare).

I figured Clifton needed more than that. I imagine that's what Alamo will get.

Damn that's a lot of money but with him being a Jr in college they probably thought he wouldn't sign.

That's a big payday.

He got exactly his slot.

How much was Clifton rumored to sign for?

I was expecting at or maybe just slightly more than Appel. Not $400k more than Appel. Basically the value of a 4th round slot that could have been used on Clifton.

Well hopefully he turns out to be damn good. I kinda wanted Gray, plus he signed for under slot. Well see in the coming years if we got the right or wrong pick between the two or if they both turn out to be studs. Hopefully we don't lose out on other guys now with this signing.

Lower is better in practical terms, I can't deny that. But I like the fact that we gave out the biggest bonus under the new system. Thumb in the eye of the underslot theorists.

I guess "3B BRYANT SIGNS FOR SLOT VALUE" doesn't provoke the same froth from the masses as "BRYANT SIGNS RECORD DEAL".

Not sure how effective that thumb is going to be.

Considering that underslot has been the rule for picks this high, "sign for slot" is a little misleading. Makes it sound routine.

I could have swore I saw he had agreed for 570,000. At any rate, unless Alamo is signing for 100k plus tuition, looks like Clifton has no shot at happening. Which is disappointing.

You can see why players love Boras. He's got nothing to work with, every logic says the Cubs should have been able to get Bryant for a lot less. But somehow Boras plays tough, the Cubs give in, and Boras gets an incredibly good deal. Boras is the best, there is no doubt about it.

I'm really surprised that the Cubs gave in so far.

I suspect this also reflects the Cubs either not being honest with themselves in terms of what Boras told them in their pre-draft discussion; or else Boras not being honest. I'm pretty certain the Cubs thought they'd essentially had an agreement on a price prior to the draft, and that's why they thought they knew what they had to work with in terms of Clifton etc.. I'm pretty sure Boras changed his story after the draft from what they thought he'd agreed to before the draft.

Regardless, as Kyle has noted, usually you'll win or lose with your top pick. Bryant will define this draft, not Clifton.

That sucks. Hopefully, he can still be signed. They really couldn't get Boras to take $360K less?

Yep, which is why the first part of what you wrote doesn't hold. I'm sure Scott told the Cubs what others signed for has no bearing on my client.

I'm guessing they saw Bryant as the clear #2 player in the draft, and took him hoping for an underslot deal but knowing that full slot was a definite possibility. To me, this shows that they took Bryant because they thought he was the best available player, and I'd rather they do that than take a guy they rated lower just so they could sign a few more third and fourth round talents (who have very little chance of ever panning out).

Alamo isn't in it for the money. It's about the glory. It's about bravely making the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of a brighter tomorrow. A willingness to lose the battle knowing that his sacrifice is one that will help his comrades win the war. William Barrett Epstein drew a line in the sand. Alamo was the first to bravely cross it. Money was the furthest thing from his mind. A willingness to accept defeat so long as it paves the road to the ultimate victory tomorrow. I can go on.
