Uh, my point was if he was putting up those numbers CONSISTENTLY it wouldn't be that big of a deal but he's very inconsistent. The fact that he's a heavy singles hitter and the fact that hurts his value.

For the record, the way Castro has been swinging these last few games, he looks like he's making better contact and not trying to be a player he's not.

I like Castro a lot too, but the parts of his performance we have to mark as outliers to get him to usefulness can't keep growing.

If he finishes this year with his second below replacement in three years, it wouldn't be out of line to look for a replacement this offseason.

Hopefully he takes the rest of the year and makes it moo.

No [expletive], Kyle. Nobody's making excuses; people are only ever looking for reasons to hope he's turning it around because it only helps the team.

Or countering dumb meatballery. Why would anyone actually just be trying to justify keeping a player who isn't useful?

10 years ago before the heavy sabermetric movement, a majority of the GMs would look past the stats the even us as fans can dissect easily now. All fans used to focus on was AVG, HR, RBI and maybe OBP.

The first part really read like you were saying people were making excuses for him. Of course, that very well could just be me reading it through a default Kyle-filter.

Starlin Castro is incredibly bad right now.

He's 2nd to last among qualified SS's in dWAR

He's 2nd to last among qualified SS's in oWAR

He's 2nd to last among qualified SS's in WAR

He's 158th among qualified players in WAR

His May was bad

.221/.264/.274/.538

His June hasn't been much better

.259/.291/.370/.661

This is a guy that was supposedly untradeable.

Yeah, a .123 increase in OPS isn't much of a difference at all.

My favorite part is he won't get benched or sent down and all you can do is sit there and sweat and lick your teeth.

2015 hasn't been kind to shortstops. Starlin isn't even the worst shortstop in town this season.

Decent/really good players at that position have just has an awful time of it so far - Starlin, Ramirez, Desmond, Andrus.

Castro had a good April, a horrific May, and is having a slightly below average June. Several thousand past PAs say that his July is likely to be above average to good, and he'll need a long stretch of really good/great performance to get his overall season numbers on track. With Baez's struggles, absence, and now injury plus Alcantara's struggles, there is no immediate replacement for him, and he's always been more likely to be traded in the offseason anyway.

Basically he was horrendous in May and this month he's been about replacement level. Nobody thinks he's having a good season overall, but this still seems like an odd time for someone to rant like his season is imploding and killing the Cubs. Of course, this rant is courtesy of the that outrageous buttplug of a Cardinals fan, so whattayagonnado?

With yet another Castro mental lapse last night, it really puts Joe Maddon in a bad spot. He can't hurt Castro's trade value by sitting him down or publicly criticize him, but not 'respecting 90' goes against the direction of the team. Castro, who was supposed to be one the leaders of this team, can't be allowed to continue this way. How many clubhouse conversations does it take before it works?

the only sensible thing to do is have him put to sleep, imo

For the billionth time: NOBODY IS SAYING HE'S HAVING A GOOD YEAR. These discussions get going thanks to histrionics where people start ranting like he's some kind of team-crippling anchor that needs to be dealt with. The Cubs don't have any better options to play instead of him right now, and benching him or sending him down accomplishes nothing except placating meatballs. After a horrendous May he's playing around replacement level, so what exactly is the point of repeatedly bemoaning the existence of Starlin Castro like he's sabotaging the Cubs from within?
