I think it's time to face facts, the meatheads were right. Starlin Castro is not a great baseball player.

His play this year has been horrendous and has hurt the Cubs way more than it's helped and it's not a BABIP issue right now because his BABIP is sitting right where it needs to be. His walk rate is good for bottom 10 in the league and some dude named Jose Ramirez on the Indians who is hitting .190 has a higher offensive WAR than him.

Ryan Theriot’s worst year with the Cubs (2007):

.266/.326/.356 0.9 WAR

Starlin Castro 2015:

.265/.295/.337 -0.2 WAR

Omg this is dumb. I assume ar means Arkansas which obviously means dumbassmotherfucker

Using stats and facts isn't really dumb

First off, I issued goony a warning for his post.

Second, I think the part that people are reacting to is the first paragraph, not your stats and facts.

fair warning, I was expecting the filter to work, also War for a year vs War thru may 25 is incredibly stupid.

I figured that was the case. I have no idea why that didn't work - I tried it in the mod forum with various combinations and that one just gets through for some reason.

Yeah, that was a terrible use of stats.

He sucks and is bad and will be bad forever.

The question isn't should we trade him, it's can we get anything. We might have to package him with like Vogelbach or something to get someone to take his contract.

Posted
his whole career he averages 2 WAR per 155 G which makes him a useful guy but i'm done expecting further meaningful development - his flaws are probably fairly intrinsic - so if you're confident Baez can closely approximate that value i don't see the tragedy in parting with Castro for young unproven mlb-ready 55fv hitter or 60fv pitcher if you can, much as it pains me to say

I've never been in love with him as a player, but I just don't see ever getting fair value (even when he's playing well - I'm not writing him off over the first 6 or whatever weeks).

Now, it'd be selling low. As it is, when he's on his game, it'd be hard to get fair value in return because of the surplus value inherent in that contract. I don't really know what you do other than just let him play and hope he outperforms that contract instead of just earning it. If we could somehow know Baez were ready to step in and outproduce him, then yeah, I suppose you can just take whatever you get for him, but it seems risky, especially given Javy's bottom out potential.

So basically I don't know

Bob Brenly also talked [expletive] about Aramis, and he's been doing the same [expletive] with Castro and was doing it again this series:

http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2015/05/analyzing-bob-brenly-the-way-he-analyzes-starlin-castro/

kind of embarrassed it didn't occur to me to write that first.

Brenly and Len had a cool chemistry, but Bob meatballed the [expletive] out all the damn time. JD's analysis tends to be MUCH better, plus he and Len also get along just fine. Upgrades all around; go shave on your stupid mustache, Brenly.

My wife as a huge fan of Len and Bob...and was quite upset when Bob left. As a result, she was not a fan of JD for quite a while, but she's really coming around on him this season.

I heard a discussion over the week-end that Ruben Amaro is telling teams that you must take Ryan Howard along with Hamels. He needs to get out from under the contracts. Theo won't do that and I don't know many teams that will. And why would you deal Castro now when he's struggling at the plate? I do think they'll trade him for a #2-3 SP but it's still early and other teams aren't ready to do a white flag trade.

Cubs fan from eastern Pennsylvania here. I don't want the cubs to engage in any kind of deals with the Phillies. They've got nothing we really want, and lots of trash (washed up players and huge contracts) that they want to peddle onto others. Just stay away theo, cole hamels isn't that good anyways.

your geographic location doesn't make you any less wrong about hamels. welcome though.

he's outperformed his fip 6 of the lat 8 years. probably just one of those guys.

What I meant by "not that good" was I personally wouldn't want to have him as my #1 or #2 starter, which is what Amaro and the Phillies seem to be pricing him as. Guess I should've clarified my opinion the first time around.

Hi, welcome! Now let me disagree with you...

1. Hamels IS a #1 or 2 but if it makes you feel better, for us he can slot in at 3 behind Lester and Arrietta. And with a 4 like Hammel and a 5 like Hendricks, who really cares about arbitrary numbers?

2. Of course Philly is asking for a big return for Hamels -- just look at what Samardzija brought back. Here's the thing, though: we can give up a damned good package and not miss a beat. While they aren't without warts, a group of Baez+Vogelbach and/or a few others would improve Philly's future outlook without hurting ours too much. But for me, I wouldn't want to see Javy destroying fastballs in the NL unless it's for us. Also, Philly fans don't deserve his badassery.

i'm so blah on the potential available TORPs to trade for (Hamels and Cueto). Those guys are boring.

I wish like King Felix were out there or something.
