Only thing other than the kile announcement that i remember is that he got the hit that lead to that weird ricky gutierrez play against the rockies in 2001.

Yep, that's always the first thing that pops in my head.

Sort-of related, I feel like a good way to test if you're dealing with a Cubs' die-hard (presuming they're old enough to have seen it) is to ask if they know who the three players in that rundown were. Random thing that only lunatics like us remember, I'm sure.

gutierrez, sosa and girardi.

best cubs gave i've ever been to. i wonder if the sportscenter video i uploaded years ago is still floating around online...

I was at that game too. I think I might even still have the radio call saved somewhere.

Craziest damn gave I'd ever seen. First and only time the 7th inning stretch conductor was ejected from the game, and then that final play. Holy crap.

Anyone know where there is video of that play? I keep trying to find it.

Also, shockingly, Girardi was an All-Star in his second stint with the Cubs.

here you go:

Wasn't that the year that the first guy to answer the phone made the team?

RT @MLBBruceLevine Greg Maddux possible for Cub job .Maybe brother interviewing for same gig. Source said either bro can be impact manager.

I really want the Maddux bros.

I'm imagining a sort of Mario/Luigi dynamic here.

I had never noticed that Chip Caray initially blew the play by play call. He first says that Gutierrez was out, but then changes it to safe.

UPDATE 9:13 AM: Heard from a source that Manny Acta and Sandy Alomar may be the Cubs top two choices after Girardi. There are some that may even prefer Alomar as the top choice overall.

There are no absolute criteria, but we will prioritize Cleveland Indians managerial experience and we will prioritize expertise developing young talent.

UPDATE 11:38 AM: Not really an update because I missed this last night, but according to David Kaplan, Girardi has no interest in either the Nationals or the Reds. It's Cubs or Yankees, so if Girardi turns down this latest Yankees offer, it will look pretty good for the Cubs.

I never kept a journal or anything like that as a kid, but I wrote down my memories of that game just afterward and put it in my baby book so I knew I would always have it.

Yeah. I believe there was a late injury to one of the catchers on the All-Star roster and Girardi was the one who answered the call.

Was that when Steve McMichael got ejected by Angel Hernandez?

If there's a call of a big moment it's a safe bet that Chip fucks it up somehow.

It looked like Angel Hernandez said safe, then out.

What changed with Mike Maddux this time around? Last year it seemed the Cubs wanted him and he turned down the job because he didn't want to leave or move his family.

I would think the fact he turned it down, or withdrew at the very least WOULD be held against him. Especially as a guy without managerial experience. Which the Cubs really want this time around.

For the love of all that is holy:Shawon was a career 7.3 WAR player.

This surprises you?

Not anymore, but I remember him being one of the first players I looked up when the lights switched on stats-wise and a little part of younger me dying inside when I saw the truth. I wasn't expecting him to be good, but man, that was ugly.

The first game I went to on my own, without my parents, was in high school. I was sitting on the first base side, in some seats a friend of mine provided, and I almost caught a Dunston overthrow. It went off my fingertips, and the hand of the guy behind me, and ended up somewhere in the next section up. IIRC, we were in the Field boxes. I remember being honestly shocked that a throw ended up there, then a buddy reminded me it was Dunston throwing.

Looks like Ricketts is opening up the wallet to try to get Girardi

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-1007-cubs-chicago-20131007,0,4360962.story

The Cubs haven't won a World Series title since 1908, so they're content to wait as long as possible until Joe Girardi decides whether to accept an offer to stay with the Yankees or pursue other opportunities.

There's plenty of guarded optimism because the Cubs have made it clear through channels that they are willing to top whatever offer the Yankees tender, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

Girardi, who is completing a three-year contract that paid him about $3 million in 2013, could be in line for a new contract that is longer than three years and could be more than $5 million annually, the source added.

The Cubs aren't worried about being in a holding pattern even though the Yankees won't grant Girardi permission to talk directly to the Cubs as his contract doesn't expire until Nov. 1.

There's a strong sense that it won't take nearly that long for Girardi to make a decision, based on his comments to New York writers at the end of the season.

With the money they have coming off the books throwing top dollar at a manager isn't a big deal. Joe Maddon makes $3M/yr and Mike Scioscia makes $5M/yr. So giving Girardi $5-6M/yr when you could have payroll around $75M isn't a big deal. Landing Tanaka would be opening up the pocketbook because of the posting price he will cost. If they drop $50M, give or take, to win the bid on Tanaka then I'll see that as money starting to be used. Even if they do not add any other significant piece this off-season. If the Cubs get Tanaka and Girardi I'll consider it a good off-season. If they only get Girardi I won't be overly impressed, but I will consider it a good addition.
