Then Kyle shows up, blows up the comments section. lol

To be fair, I was blowing up BN's comments this morning before that article was posted.

And his argument for why it's impossible for the business side to pressure Epstein was nonsensical, even if the rest of the article was good.

It all comes out of the baseball budget.

You don't know that. Stop saying things like you know that.

It's entirely possible that whatever money goes to him isn't money that would otherwise have been spent on player payroll.

Bernstein says that the Cubs are prepared to offer Girardi 5yrs/$30mil.

Jesus Christ

I mean, not that I care about the money if it's not coming out of payroll, but WTF.

If they do this they better actually aggressively pursue winning at the MLB level this offseason.

No [expletive]. Unless we're adding impact players and think we need his help to do it, I see zero value in this at all. Even then, it's sketchy at best.

Of course I know that.

There's no special Girardi Budget, and they aren't going to take it out of the Marketing budget. Paying the manager comes out of the baseball budget.

Stop making an irrelevant point about the baseball budget. I said MLB payroll the first time that you responded with "baseball budget" and I said MLB payroll the second time.

And I said baseball budget every time, because that's where it's coming from.

Maybe the difference comes from MLB payroll. Maybe it comes from IFAs. Maybe it comes from the draft. Maybe it comes from scouts. But it's coming from somewhere, there's no free lunch.

Is there any reason the front office might choose a guy like girardi or are we going to just assume this is ricketts being ricketts?

Hard to tell. They do seem to like having the best of everything outside of the MLB roster.

Why would you respond to my post about MLB payroll with a completely irrelevant point about the baseball budget?

Of course the [expletive] manager's salary comes out of the baseball budget. It does by definition, FFS.

So what is Bernstein's track record?

Yeah, unfortunately I have no reason to think the manager salary doesn't come out of the baseball budget

My mind immediate jumps to the 5-6 milion IFA budget we're not allowed to spend more than 250k of at one time.

Because whether you do or not, I care about the baseball budget *and* the MLB payroll. You can feel free to only care about payroll if you want, of course.

For one year, tho...and then possibly alternating years after that.

He said the Bulls were on the verge of getting Kobe in 2007...

Didn't they change the rule after this year to make the "alternating years" strategy less appealing or completely moot?

If the manager making a few million dollars has a material impact on the baseball budget by 2016...

And he called the Greg Olsen trade about a year early. He has good sources, but it seems like he's always sure about what's going to happen when maybe it's not quite as definite as he indicates. But I do believe he believes it.

Nope, they're hope is having a draft. Until that is decided, they've done nothing. If nothing is in place, I 'd suspect we spend huge again in 2015.

I mean, it's probably like a million more than we figured he'd get per year? Maybe 3-4M more than the next guy would get. Not a hugely consequential sum of money.

It's just the thought process behind such a move that would bother me. And the fact that I think there are better candidates who could be had for like 1/4 as much.

It just feels weird to strip the player budget under the flag of "lack of funds," and then go out make your manager the highest paid in baseball.

It's.....schizophrenic.

And, I think, it further underlines that Ricketts is full of horsecrap when he says he can't spend.
