@jjcoop36: Bummed we left Jorge Soler off the Midseason Top 50 (we worried too much about his injuries/stiffness). Happy we were big on Dalton Pompey.

You should be.

How did Bryant do at 3B this year? Any educated guesses if he will be able to stay there?

He had a number of bad moments out there. He showed enough to lead one to believe he could be at least passable at 3B.

Assuming he could play major league 3B, there's still four or five other guys in the org that can do it better.

Sure, but you're not moving Bryant off third for Villanueva.

He played poorly enough that he may start 2015 as a full time outfielder. He played well enough that he may get the chance to play his way off the position at the MLB level.

Personally, I think they're seeing him as an outfielder long term(read: 2016+, 2017 at the latest), and with Valbuena in tow and Russell on the way I bet he starts as an outfielder unless there's an OF acquisition that will demand time.

I'd move him for Luis Valbuena if I thought it'd help us win more games in 2015.

Yeah, it's not just Bryant vs. Valbuena et al., it's Bryant vs. whoever he'd be replacing in LF. If Valbuena at third base and Bryant in left field gives you more wins than Bryant at third, whoever in LF and Valbuena on the bench, then you move him.

every time i've given any thought to next year's lineup from May to whenever Russell may get called up, i've tried to decide what's better between valbuena 3b bryant lf and bryant 3b and coghlan lf.

i like coghlan a little more as a hitter but i think it's the former.

yes yes yes, Coghlan is a poison pill that must be traded immediately

Yeah it makes sense to trade Coghlan and acquire someone who can start in a COF spot and potentially play center once Bryant comes up and in case Mendy is still struggling. I'd like to trade Coghlan and sign Aoki, but I imagine a lot of teams will be in on him given the lack of OF talent available in free agency. I guess we do still have Sweeney and Ruggiano as options as well.

He's fine peripherally in that he didn't put up his numbers as a BABIP-fueled fluke, but he's already shown an up and down nature with the bat in his career, and when you combine with the fact that he is an atrocious defender, I'd rather get something for him and either get another 4th OF or go with Sweeney & Ruggiano for that role.

not that I want to keep Coghlan or anything, but what peripherals of his are red flags?

I always figured injuries held him back after his strong rookie year and that the reason he performed as well as he did this year was simply because he was healthy. I see no reasn he can't have a similar year statistically next year.

I do agree he's not the greatest defensive outfielder and that he makes a more valuable 4th outfielder than starter.

I agree. The Cubs have a lot of very useful role players on this team. All they need is continued progress from the rookies and a superstar season from Castro or Rizzo and the are there In terms of players. They really need to sign Lester or get a front line starter in a trade and they will contend for the foreseeable future.

Schwarber will start '15 at Myrtle Beach or Tenn as FULL-TIME catcher
