That late in the season 4 game series in MKE in 08' where we laid an absolute beat down on the Brewers was so awesome

It was the end of July and we basically [expletive] buried them.

In the division, and it was glorious.

However, they went on to win the Wild Card and win more playoff games (1) than the Cubs did (0). Fuuuuuuuuck me.

I know we all know this, but I was thinking about today about how the four touchstone seasons for Cubs fans are an epic regular-season choke, two epic playoff chokes, and a playoff sweep.

And the 6th (1998) is also a playoff sweep and the 7th (1989) is a 4-1 beatdown from the Giants. The Cubs have never lost a playoff series in relatively competitive fashion (4-2 or 3-1). It's either been a complete beatdown (3-0 or 4-1) or a backbreaker (3-2 or 4-3). Life sucks.

Simple, if the Cubs lose a playoff series, they'll typically only win 0, 1, 2 or 3 games in that series.

It's either a winner-take-all game or a sweep basically. 4-1 is stretching it, but I consider a 5 game victory in a 7 game series pretty dominant.

There's never been a Cubs playoff series where they represented themselves well, but lost in non-heartbreaking fashion. They've either been dominated or pissed it away.

So basically the Cubs haven't lost a 5 game series 3-1 or a 7 game series 4-2 in the 6 playoff series they've lost since 1945?

it's got more to do with the manner and order in which things have happened than the actual score of the series

Yes. They also haven't "forced" a game 5 or 7. They won a game 5 in ATL, but after losing game 4 at home. I'm convinced that's the only way they win anything--if they have to come back in a series, Red Sox style.

I never really considered '07 to be an epic choke. Maybe it's because of how bad we were in 2006, but I remember 2007 being a somewhat surprising season where you didn't expect them to make much noise in the playoffs.

I was referring to 1969, 1984, 2003 and 2008.

I expected them to be better than they were in 07. I think most did. They started off really badly. Then from like June 1st on, they were the best team in baseball or thereabouts, IIRC.

What made that series suck even worse was that the Diamondbacks had a negative run differential. And the since debunked secret sauce loved us.

I thought that was clear.

1984, .

That was my first year following the Cubs. I remember being in school and our teacher had the game on the radio. 13-0 romp in game 1, Sutcliff homered. I think I got home in time for the 7th inning. Don't remember much about game two other than they won 4-2 or something like that. Then the weekend in San Diego, what a gut punch. But had they beaten San Diego, the Tigers probably would have won that series. 2003 was much worse imo though, They would have beaten the Yankees.

I'll be honest, I was thinking the regular season choke job you were talking about was 2004.

Same. 1969 doesn't register for me as a thing beyond associating it with all of those old HOFers who hang around (for obvious reasons).

It means nothing to me personally, but it is a HUGE part of Cubs fans as a whole. It was also obvious and the 2004 season was nothing like an "epic" regular season choke. It is also pathetic how much that 1969 team means to people.

Aren't most of those people dying (seriously)?

I guess if you were a teenager for that you're not that old.

How many teams with 4 HOFs didn't make the playoffs? I mean, it really is shocking to me.

I think that's the whole reason voters tried to keep Santo out of the HOF for so long.

Before 1969 there were no playoffs, as for that year it more was the Mets getting really hot more than the Cubs choking.
