I do like the visual that they signed Kottaras then got to Spring Training and thought, "woah, this guy is too good for what we're trying to do here, better cut him with the quickness"

Theo and Jed are smart enough to know that going from Kottaras to Baker is going to cost you a game over the course of the season. It's worked out great for them, as its cost them more than that already.

Yes because if there's anything that will determine the outcome of the season, it's the backup catcher.

No, but it is amazingly easy to lose lots of games just by having your worst players be as bad as possible. You can have your better players still play well but those black holes really drag everybody down.

As illustrated by every offensive player on our team not named Castro, Rizzo or Valbuena.

Jesse Rogers, the ESPN Cubs guy...jeeze...so bad. He's SO bad.

He was talking on twitter how Arrieta has no-hit stuff, but Samardzija doesn't. Nope. Not going to fly, Jesse. Not that Arrieta is bad, just that Samardzija is a better pitcher, and he has better stuff. He didn't even look at any of the data.

That's among his lesser offenses in the stupidity department. He makes guys like Sullivan and Wittenmyer look exceedingly competent. Even Levine.

knowing what we know about having guys like castro, rizzo, arrieta, wood, and valbuena (plus bryant/baez/alcantara/soler/etc and whatever they give you) locked up for pretty cheap, it really sucks that we have to wait 5-6 years before this organization has anything approaching dodgers/yankees type money because this, right now, would be a really unique opportunity to have a ton of money to spend and a ton of good production locked in for really cheap while having not much else committed.

suddenly combining all that surplus value we have locked in for the next few years with a payroll approaching $200M would be just absurd.

as it is, if they decide to/are able to (however you look at it) have a $100M payroll next year, we're in a pretty good spot...but damn.

I hope that's the plan. Unless you are the Dodgers or Yankees, you really have to balance bringing along your own stars with buying what you need. Obviously the more you "grow" the less you have to buy, and the more you can spend on it.

The only problem I see down the road is that the cost of top line pitching has skyrocketed to the point that middle to backend guys are getting in the 10-15mil range, It's very hard to buy a staff at that type of cost. At least the FO has shown the ability to find cheap guys to finish off the rotation economically.

If we end up developing the bulk of our order, it will be easier to take on a salary like Stanton, or a true number 1-possibly both.

It's a lot easier(and cheaper) to buy complimentary pieces than studs.

Cubs are 1.5 games away from falling out of a protected draft pick for next year, not that I think it will matter either way.

As dubious as I am about us signing an upper level free agent, I think the chance drop to 0% if it's going to cost us an early teens draft pick.

I don't think it will be a huge concern as I'm guessing Rusin/Wada/Beeler will do a fine job of tanking us a bit as replacements for Hammel and Samardzija

Yeah, if we've got an unprotected pick, I think we'll pass for sure on big FA again unfortunately. Good news is I suspect we'll do all we can to make sure we're protected.

Bad news again though, I think it'll get pretty hairy this year. I can see Wood pitching better in the 2nd half and Arrieta becoming a legit frontline starter, kind of canceling out losing Shark and Hammel. And I can see Alcantara making an impact in the 2nd half, helping Rizzo and Castro out, with Castillo turning in a solid 2nd half too.

It's going to come down as to how bad Beeler, Rusin, Wada and Hendricks are. And I've got a feeling that as a group, 2 relatively average ML starters turn up there. Maybe not even average, but not completely awful.

[expletive] it, it's obviously not bad news if that happens and if it does, maybe it forces them to go against the grain and give up the 1st anyway.

Holy balls. Olt is on a run of 3-for-55 with 33 Ks in 60 PAs.

I take back my previous post. Put him in everyday and we're golden.

Feels crappy to write this, but it looks like he's overmatched. Had high hopes for him after ST, but it is what it is.

I wonder what kind of insane arbitrary endpoints you can put together from Tony Gwynn's career for plate appearances it took him to get 33 k's?

From 8/14/91 to 7/19/93, Gwynn struck out 33 times in 998 plate appearances.

If Olt were to get sent down, where would he go?? He wouldn't get much playing time at Iowa (if any) with Bryant, unless maybe they stuck him at first base. Would they consider dropping him to Tennessee, although Villanueva at third there?

I don't think it really matters at this point. Send him and let the manager in Iowa worry about it. Bring up Alcantara and maybe even Valaika or Watkins to get somebody with potential to hit in there instead of Barney. I've tired of his act.
