Players who went to bad teams before they decided to intentionally be bad are allowed to whine about having years of their career pissed away on some hypothetical farm system dream team. To act like Garza's out of line or a dumbass to say that it sucks to be on teams with no prayer of winning is ridiculous.

Maybe so but he is being disengenious because if the Cubs had been willing to pay him he would have stayed and be saying how he wants to be part of the excitement when things finally turn around.

He is full of crap and just likes to hear himself talk. And it makes him feel better about himself to talk [expletive] about the Cubs and tell Shark to leave because he is jilted they wouldn't give him the money he wanted and valued prospects more than him.

Or he has the clarity of realizing the bullet he dodged now that he's put some distance between himself and the wreckage.

Yes, but they also have actual wins. Eases the sting a bit.

Eh, he could have gone a ton of places and got team wins. It sounds like he's really into personal ones. But maybe I'm reading him wrong.

Well, based on where he ended up the bold part doesn't seem to be the case.

I agree that he wanted/was willing to stay here, but often times people are willing to overlook a lot when they're paid well and like the people around them (it sure seemed like he got along with most of the other players). Plenty of players want to stick it to their former team after they're gone, plus you have the added aspect of him looking back at the Cubs situation now that he's outside of it and realizing how fucked up it is and ultimately being happy he's anywhere but in Chicago or Houston.

Plus imagine the shock of going from the Rays to the Cubs to playing in Miller Park. Talk about movin' on up.

Funny thing is Garza was brought in to be part of a winner.

We had a team on paper that was made to compete.

We had a solid bullpen, and 3 good starters . Offensively there was Ramirez,Castro,Soriano, Fukudome, Byrd, Soto and Pena..they just fell apart but you can't say they didn't at least try to put a winner on the field.

But that was probably the last attempt.

Perhaps, Mr. Garza if you guys hadn't failed so miserably, they wouldn't have gone with the full rebuilding plan.

At least he's not being misogynistic this time.

The point isn't that he was right to say that; it's that he now plays for a team that also has no chance of winning big. If he really was so gung ho about winning he would have taken less to go to a legit contender, or even stay with Texas.

the team he's on now has the best record in baseball

yeah. that's probably not gonna last.

yeah, joke will be on him when the brewers finish way ahead of the cubs in the standings instead of way, way ahead of the cubs in the standings.

Random flashback question. Why was Les Lancaster awarded a win in this game? Shouldn't it have gone to Paul Assenmacher?

I believe the rule is that essentially, if the starting pitcher leaves with the lead prior to the 5th and the team maintains that lead for the game, it becomes up to the scorekeeper's discretion to award the win to whatever reliever comes in and "earns" it.

I don't think the Brewers can overtake the Cards but they have the makings of a serious playoff contender barring injury.

They have big bats in Braun, Ramirez, and CarGo, all should/could post .850+ ops, Segura and Lucroy could approach .800.

Add in Reynolds/Overbay platoon that could also post above .800 and Gennett who should hit around .300 with a .330 ob%-they have a ton of offense.

Pitching-wise they have 3 proven starters in Lohse, Gallardo and Garza. Estrada has been a very solid starter in Milwaukee and Peralta is a good young pitcher that seems to be coming on.

K-rod seems to be back in form, Thornberg gives them a good young arm, Henderson closed a lot last year, duke and smith give them 2 lefties out of the pen.

Heck, after looking at this, it's hard to say they aren't for real. They have more proven commodities than anyone but the Cardinals.

When you look at an offense that could have 5 players go above .800 ops, and another platoon spot that could. Plus a real chance for 2or 3 spots go over .900 that only could carry this team a long way.

The only thing that can really stop them is injuries or if their bullpen implodes.

Maybe that team looked like a contender in Hendry's mind. Anyone else could see they were going to be bad.

Nate Schierholtz is already at -0.8 fWAR, lmao.

Down to 0.6 fWAR for his Cubs' career. Can we call that a failed signing?

The signing was ok, they just didn't get rid of him last season when they should have when his numbers weren't awful.

So an ok signing and a bad non-trade?

I think you have to let the season play out before you decide he's bad this year. Last year was basically exactly the output he has had every season of his career. He had a little higher slugging, and a little lower ob%/BA for a slightly higher ops.

His war was 1.3, his career war has been right around 1.0.

Obviously not earth shaking but it says he should return to that level by the end of the season.

Until we have another option just let it play out.

He has proven there is no reason to give him at bats vs any lefties. His best value is as a straight LH platoon.

As for 5 mil, I think we need to have a talk with the arbitration officer.

It wasn't just "a contender in Hendry's mind" and apparently not "anyone else could see they were going to be bad" because they were picked to be a solid team by most experts. After the trade deadline, it could be many years before we have "solid bullpen, and 3 good starters" in addition to a potentially solid offense.

Do you know what fWAR is?

That was the year that Shark was tough in the pen. Marshall was there, Marmol was good, and they had Russell.

Offensively in 2010 Soto had a ops of .890 in 105 games, Soriano .818, Byrd .775, Fukudome .809, Castro had a .347 OB%, AND .755 OPS. Ramirez was coming off his worst season but did post .871 in 2011, add Pena who posted .819- I think we forget what kind of offense that should have been. Obviously some guys fell off, but man we would kill for a lineup that had 5 guys that would post an .800 ops, and a couple of others that were close.

We should have felt good about that team, they weren't a sure fire winner but we had to feel that if Wells, Silva (who was decent in 2010, 10-6 4.22 era) or Cashner worked out we could be right in the middle.

Unfortunately they bombed.

Looking back, we would kill for some of the performances these "non-winners" put up..
