I know he's had a spotty history with injuries, but any other reason the Cards would just let him go?

Because he's not good.

just injuries

if healthy he's very, very good.

don't like this at all from a cards fan perspective

@ESPNChiCubs: Shawn Camp to the DL with sprained right big toe, per Cubs

Hmm, I wonder if that's a we made the wrong move and now we have to save face type of injury and they bring back Bowden or if they just bring in the guy from the Cards.

They claim this injury was bugging him over the weekend, which if true makes sticking him into a high-leverage spot last night even more mind-blowingly stupid than it already was. I assume this is a typical "you suck right now, we're going to invent an injury" situation though.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today claimed right-handed pitcher Alex Burnett off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

Burnett, 25, made a career-high 67 relief appearances for the Minnesota Twins last season, going 4-4 with 10 holds and a 3.52 ERA (28 ER/71.2 IP). He led the club in relief innings and his 2.49 ERA (12 ER/43.1 IP) prior to the All-Star break ranked fourth among A.L. relievers. He surrendered just four home runs, walked 26 and struck out 36, a year in which he made his second-career, Opening Day roster (also in 2010). Burnett finished April with a 1.42 ERA (2 ER/12.2 IP) and later recorded 14-straight scoreless appearances (16.0 IP), May 28-July 2.

In 2011, Burnett made 66 relief appearances for the Twins, pitching to a 5.51 ERA (31 ER/50.2 IP) and stranding 52 of 62 inherited runners. All told, Burnett is 8-11 with a 4.73 ERA (90 ER/171.1 IP) in 176 major league relief appearances spanning parts of four seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2010-12) and Orioles (2013).

The six-foot, 221-pound Burnett began Spring Training with Minnesota, the organization that selected him in the 12th round of the 2005 draft, before he was claimed off waivers by Toronto, March 29. He was designated for assignment, April 10, and claimed off waivers by Baltimore, April 12.

This season, Burnett is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA (2 ER/12.0 IP) in nine minor league relief appearances between Triple-A Buffalo and Triple-A Norfolk. He made two relief appearances for Baltimore this month, totaling 1.1 innings, before he was designated for assignment by the Orioles, May 23.

Burnett, a native of Westminster, Calif., owns a 29-24 record with 16 saves and a 3.37 ERA (199 ER/531.2 IP) in 166 career minor league games (73 starts). He was named a 2007 Midwest League All-Star with Single-A Beloit.

After a quick look at fangraphs, I see he is young for a pen arm and can throw in the low to mid 90's but doesn't miss many bats. His velocity may have regressed this year (SSS) and his minor league numbers are decent as a reliever. Does anyone know anything else?

Bowden cleared waivers.

A little relieved. He didn't have any trade value, but I thought someone might scoop him up in waivers. He's not really valuable, but he's likable and the kind of guy you want stashed at AAA in case you need someone in an emergency.

Re: Miles on Twitter, Burnett has been optioned, Putnam has been called up, and Fujikawa sent to the 60 Day DL.

It'd be nice if we could strike it rich with a waiver reliever who isn't in his mid 30s and will be gone or expensive after the year(Camp, Gregg). Putnam has a pretty nice career line and is off to a real good start in Iowa.

That's a strange and random move.

Hector Rondon with another notch on the Rule 5 belt.

@mlbtraderumors: Braves Designate Juan Francisco For Assignment http://t.co/q9YMfeL82v #mlb

25 years old

Plays 3rd base

Nice power

Not so nice OBP

Sure, why the heck not.

Because Valbuena, Ransom, Vitters, and Stewart are all better or comparable and hogging all the playing time in our upper levels. Francisco is redundant in the Cubs system. And like Kyle said, his K and BB rates are dog [expletive], and have been his entire career.

Agreed on Valbuena. If he were a righty, I'd be interested in bringing him in to replace Ransom, who's over ten years older. I really don't know what to expect from Vitters, and as for Stewart, I'm still convinced that he's still here only because the Cubs aren't willing to gut his salary and he isn't willing to walk away from it and he'll be in Iowa until one side changes their mind.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Blake Parker from Triple-A Iowa and placed right-handed pitcher Rafael Dolis on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 27) with a mild right forearm strain. To make room for Parker on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Alex Burnett was designated for assignment.

Parker, who will wear uniform number 50, will be available for the Cubs tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field.

Parker, 27, is 0-1 with seven saves and a 2.04 ERA (4 ER/17.2 IP) in 16 relief appearances with Iowa this season. He has limited opponents to a .133 batting average (8-for-60), including a .067 mark (2-for-30) against right-handed hitters. Parker has struck out 26 batters in 17.2 innings pitched, an average of 13.2 strikeouts per nine innings, and has pitched to a 1.04 ERA (1 ER/8.2 IP) in his last nine outings. Earlier this season, he became Iowa’s all-time saves leader, a mark that currently stands at 41 saves.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound righthander made his major league debut with the Cubs last season, posting no record and a 6.00 ERA (4 ER/6.0 IP) in seven relief appearances. Parker joined the Cubs on May 17 and recorded a 0.00 ERA (4.1 IP) through four outings before landing on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his right elbow. He returned in late August to make three appearances before returning to the disabled list on September 7 for the rest of the season.

Parker was originally selected by the Cubs in the 16th round of the 2006 Draft. He is 14-17 with 66 saves and a 2.98 ERA (114 ER/344.1 IP) in 257 minor league appearances, all in relief.

Dolis, 25, has no record and a 0.00 ERA (5.0 IP) in five appearances covering three stints with the Cubs this season.

Burnett, 25, was claimed off waivers from Baltimore on Monday and tossed a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday in his Cubs debut. He was optioned to Iowa the next day.

Not the first time they've done the "claim a guy and DFA him within a week" dance, I agree it's confusing at face value.

See if you can get him through waivers and add some depth. Not that confusing. It's a potential (nearly) free addition.

But this wasn't a Rosario situation. They claimed him, added him, optioned him, DFAd him. In the end it will almost certainly make no difference, but is Parker that much better a bet than Burnett to expose him to waivers?
