More from source on Cubs TV: Remaining 15 games could end up part of WGN-TV deal,or may end up as one-offs for other channels such as The U.

I would assume this is a 1-year agreement and the Cubs will hope for increased ratings this season so they can negotiate a more favorable medium-term deal to bridge the gap until the Comcast deal is up.

Again David, Cub fans are being screwed.

The Blackhawks paid The Score to carry their games for at least a year(before Old Man Wirtz passed), because they were bad and no one wanted to pony up broadcast fees. Seems to me the White Sox did something like that too. I think the last thing you want is 'King Crane' anywhere near the media rights contract discussion. It will become a disaster.

You better let the Ricketts family know before it's too late.

RT @MikeKellams: Cubs, WLS-Ch. 7 closing in on deal to air 25 games next season, via @RobertChannick. http://t.co/CDgs7EIZQV

In a surprise move, the Cubs are about to strike a deal with WLS-Ch.7 to broadcast a portion of the team's schedule through 2019.

The ABC-owned station is expected to carry 25 games per season beginning in April. The station would have its pick of games, which would air in primetime, daytime and weekends. The deal is expected to be finalized within days, according to sources.

Hmm. I'm gonna guess the WGN thing was a leak of some kind or just plain wrong then. Wonder what happens with the remaining ones.

Hopefully they got a pretty good deal for these 25 if they were willing to go through 2019.

Have to assume they wouldn't be signing for these 25 if the other ~56 weren't close behind.

nevermind, i totally forgot just how many games were available. i guess it could be both wgn and wls. sort of weird, but not that weird i suppose.

I want a monster deal, not getting a portion of games locked in with busted ass channel 7 until 20-[expletive]-19.

More money than the crappy WGN deal, sure, but not the [expletive] you money of the oh-so-brief insane TV deal bubble.

I'm guessing/hoping if they were willing to give them all five years and their pick of games that they got a pretty good deal on these games. We'll see. No report on that yet.

Looks like the rest may go to either CSN or WGN

The ABC-owned station is expected to carry 25 games per season beginning in April. The station would have its pick of games, which would air in primetime, daytime and weekends. The deal is expected to be finalized within days, according to sources.

The Cubs opted out of an agreement with Tribune Media's WGN-Ch. 9 last year, freeing up about 70 games on television next season and ostensibly pulling the plug on a relationship that dates to 1948. The move enabled the Cubs to sync up expiring broadcast and cable rights after the 2019 season, when the team will look to launch its regional sports network.

The potential deal with a network-owned station is something of a media curveball, with few industry observers pegging WLS-TV as a player in the Cubs' drawn-out drama to find a new TV partner. Where the balance of next season's television schedule ends up remains to be seen, but sources say WGN or CSN may pick up the remaining displaced games.

The team has been exploring moving some portion of the TV schedule over to CSN, in which the Cubs have a stake, according to sources.

Question for people who understand these things better than I do

Do we have as much to worry about with the TV bubble bursting if we're launching our own network and can likely/hopefully count on a really strong following built up by a few years of contention? Wouldn't the demand be there to profit off their popularity somehow?

I've always thought I'd pay a pretty good amount per season to watch the games...idk if maybe a streaming service would be a possibility by then or an a la carte network would be feasible where people just pay to have the Cubs Network or what.

The big concern I have with the upcoming network is carriage rights. Go look at what's happening in LA with Time Warner Sports and what happened in Houston with Comcast SportsNet Houston. They got huge deals done and couldn't get deals done with the cable/satellite providers and a ton of people are left in the dark and not able to watch. I hope to God the Cubs get deals done before launching the network or else it could get ugly here.

Well [expletive]. This really sucks for people outside the immediate Chicago area. I hope there's some kind of simulcast down here in the Bloomington area.

As opposed to what option? Do you get regular WGN (not WGNA) in Bloomington?

No, you're right....we just get WGNA. We're basically screwed no matter what until they get [expletive] worked out in 2019. I'm just not happy about it.

Are there fans of other teams that are also stuck in this dilemma? Where they don't get the local broadcast but are still blacked out of Extra Innings and MLB.TV?

Have we just been lucky because games have been on WGN my whole life?

No, you're unlucky now because of WGN. All the other teams have a regional sports network like Comcast that all of their games are on instead of the split schedule the Cubs have, and people not in the immediate area but still in blackout zones get that channel.

People in Montana almost certainly aren't getting all the Mariners games but they're still blacked out on them.

Yeah, we've all been spoiled. The Phillies and Giants, to name two, are teams I'm about certain have local network deals for at least some games, and those probably don't reach everyone in their blackout zones either.
