Come on, no one in this thread believes the Astros were pulling some long con to add Marshall to their draft class.

It appears several people believe just that.

Who are these people? We've all been pretty clear that two unexpected things happened which led to this situation. Marshall, who was supposedly not signable, became signable and Houston's doctor found something out of the normal. There was no plan before any of this. Houston's FO thought Aiken's irregularity would create the leverage they needed to get greedy and grab that one last prospect. Once they realized that Aiken wasn't going to cave and it was going to blow up in their face, they threw 5M at AIken so they could land Aiken+Nix.

I see two issues in this argument.

1. That Marshall unexpectedly became signable. I haven't read everything. But was that really unexpected? Wasn't he always signable at $1.5-$2 but nobody had the money available, or in the Cubs case they chose Cease instead, and Houston used their $1.5 slot on Nix instead? In other words, did Marshall really unexpectedly change his price tag? Or did his price tag suddenly become possibly available?

2. You seem to argue that the "irregularity" simply provided Houston an opportunity (or excuse), and they used it in a "greedy" way. The "greedy" part implies that the irregularity was just an excuse, a pretext, an opportunity, but that it didn't impact his actual value as a prospect.

Again, I would suggest that from the beginning they were happy to get Aiken and Nix; and they let that all blow up plus the PR nightmare. If the irregularity was just an insignificant thing in terms of his baseball future, while at the same time was an opportunity to create leverage, why didn't they go back to their original situation and sign Aiken and Nix for their original agreements, once they saw the leverage wasn't working?

So, I guess I'm questioning the "unexpectedness" of Marshall's sign ability pricetag. And I'm questioning the perspective that the irregularity was for Houston an unexpected "opportunity" rather than an unexpected blow/disappointment/shock/problem/concern.

Marshall doesn't matter. If you're truly worried about Aiken, you offer the minimum and be done with it. Because if that IS the case, the 2nd pick next year is worth more in terms of value than an injured Aiken, plus Nix and Marshall.

But no, they kept raising their offer to Aiken, showing how they truly view him. And they did this without even hearing any sort of counter. I'm sorry, but that wreaks of desperation.

If they would have kept a hard line stance on their minimum offer, I'd be apt to believe them. It'd SHOW serious concern on their part. But upping their offer continuously after that shows they were satisfied enough in their medical findings that they were willing to take him over the pick the following year. Which says that their findings weren't that serious.

I'm not seeing it. Who said that?

This news isn't surprising based on how disinterested in college Peters supposedly was pre-draft:

@KendallRogersPG: More news: #CalStateFullerton heralded signee, OF DJ Peters, a 36th-rdr of @Cubs, not heading to CSF. Instead, will go to Western Nevada.

He'll be eligible for the 2015 draft. There was a gap between his price tag and talent in the '14 draft, wonder if he's more realistic next year.

@kileymcd: The expectation from those close to the negotiation is that Brady Aiken will end up making a deal with the Astros around the Nix hearing.

@kileymcd: MLB's discretion situation RT @FlemmingMatthew I thought that they could not sign him after July 15. Does the grievance change things?

That's ridiculous but I guess Pedro Alvarez and Eric Hosmer will be used as precedence.

@jimcallisMLB: Zero. Don't see how MLB or MLBPA would permit that. @randyamanJD: Heard anything supporting recent rumblings @Astros could still sign Aiken?

Out of the 3 $1mil+ bonus baby HS pitcher. What odds do you put at getting at least 1 mid rotation starter out of Sands, Cease, Steele? I haven't been following MiLB enough. But I do know that I like our approach. College bat or HS bat high. Then HS or C pitchers in volume. Seems to be a great strategy.

But how much of a gamble really are guys like that?

San Diego Union-Tribune[/url]"]The July 18 deadline to sign draft picks has come and gone, with Aiken rejecting the Astros’ last-minute offer. But the team could still sign the No. 1 overall draft pick under a clause at Major League Baseball’s discretion.

The other 29 major league clubs have signed off on that clause, industry sources said. The Aikens, however, would insist on a sign-and-trade deal before agreeing to terms with Houston.

Why would the other clubs sign off on that?

Prevent the Astros from getting the No. 2 comp pick?

Could be a clause that was signed prior to this specific situation arising and not a case of teams agreeing specifically to allow Houston to sign Aiken.

@EvanDrellich: Source: Astros are 'highly unlikely' to be able to sign Brady Aiken. Commish Selig must have been referring to Nix http://t.co/UwJIHRcZPd

I'd love them to have to take Nix and forfeit the 2015 pick. [expletive] them for getting #1 3yrs in a row.

No way is that gonna happen.

It will if they grant Nix his contract

Which they won't.

Every time MLB has to make a decision involving the draft, ask yourself a question:

"Is there any outcome that would give players more leverage when negotiating with teams in the future?"

If yes, assume that outcome is off the table.

My honest guess at the Nix outcome is they sign him but lose the amount of overage they gave him off next years total pool amount.
