Alex Smith to the Chiefs is "All but done." Hopefully they didn't make the trade while he was taking a nap

So long as they don't give up much, Smith wouldn't be an awful placeholder since the QB class is so poor. If they did something like acquiring Smith, drafting Joeckel and then grabbing a Bray or Manuel (depending on the style they're looking for) later might be the best course.

Yeah, grabbing Smith, trading out of #1, and drafting a QB in the mid rounds seems like a pretty reasonable strategy to me.

Apparently the Alex Smith to KC deal is done, just waiting till 3/12 to be official. SF gets at least a 2nd rounder. KC promising a commitment to Smith. Probably a contract extension.

SF is making out like a bandit, imo. I don't think Smith will be nearly as good away from Harbaugh.

Apparently, depending on performance, KC could be sending SF two 2nd rounders. The 2013 one is the only one certain though.

So much for not giving up too much. That's way too much for a mediocre QB like Smith.

The problem is nobody is going to trade for #1 because there aren't any QBs worth taking there. QB won't go top 3 now, so a team can give up less and trade for 3 or 4. Joeckel isn't trade up worthy considering how close Eric Fisher is on his heels. Nobody's trading up for Star now. Nobody's trading up for a pass rusher. They're probably keeping #1 or getting monumentally less than the Rams got for #2 last year.

You don't have to get a huge haul, but the odds of somebody willing to give up something to make sure they land their guy are pretty good, even in a down draft. Of course, this plan worked a lot better when that trade helps you backfill the mid-rounder you gave up for Smith/Foles, but instead it's going to be #34 plus maybe more so they end up behind the "Draft Geno" plan now no matter what.

With the new constraints on rookie deals, that 1st pick is more valuable, however, with no clear-cut number 1, the demand cannot be that high. They will probably be better off trading the best guy they can get than trading down for pennies on the dollar just to trade down.

A source tells http://FOXSPORTS.com that #Packers WR Greg Jennings will not be named a franchise player, clearing the path to free agency

yeah, that's not surprising. he's going to miss rodgers a lot.

Agreed, the Packers weren't going to give him $10-12mm+ a year. He'd be an interesing option for the Patriots taking Welker's spot, imo.

He'll be plan B if the Dolphins can't get Wallace, unless somebody else scoops him up first.

Wow, that's a really bad decision. I really doubt Cook will sign long term with us so a team with lots of holes and plenty of cap space just added another hole. So glad Bud kept Munchak.....
