It's difficult to narrow down. The "good job good effort" nonsense, the one year deal schtick, the sarcasm about a master plan to sign later free agents, the hyperbole about waiting for waves of minor league talent to start being active at the MLB level, take your pick really.

 

I'm not sure it's nonsense. This is now what, the third FA to go through the same process of "we've got him signed" to "we didn't get the chance to match/he used us as leverage" thing? I don't know that it's a far intellectual leap to say that this is why you don't make plans that are contingent upon multiple things going right all at relatively the same time. And it is really hyperbole to mock and question the waves upon waves of pre arb players thing? Isn't that the admitted plan of our front office?

 

And that's not even taking into consideration how frustrating it is to see this happen multiple times.

My bad. Cespedes was one. I was thinking of Haren, but that was a trade. Puig, I guess, but I don't care about him. So 1 FA and 1 trade that fell through.

Phil Rogers and George Ofman say Theo Epstein and some Ricketts family representatives went to Miami yesterday to try and convince Sanchez to sign. Once again, you can’t argue there wasn’t a serious effort here. But I just can’t bring myself to pass out the participation trophy today. Maybe tomorrow.

Not happy that the deal didn't happen, but I'm happy to see them be so aggressive with a decent free agent. In the end, it sounds like Sanchez didn't want to come to the Cubs anyways and who can blame him. His options were to stay on a team that was in the world series last year and has made some improvements or go to a team that lost 100 games and hasn't made any significant moves to improve.

The narrative can't be "maybe it's a bad idea to wait on waves of minor league players and the right free agents becoming Cubs at the same time" AND "jeez when are they going to close a deal on this top talent they keep going after?", it's not intellectually honest in the least.

 

Yes, it's really irritating to have this many false positives about moves I'd/we'd have been happy to see completed. At the same time, it's pretty clear now that they're not done this offseason, and 2-3 shrewd moves have this team looking like a pretty decent team that's a small step from competing for a playoff berth. The Rizzo trade was made right before Christmas last year, the Marshall trade in early January. Jackson, Liriano, Marcum, and Bourn are still available in free agency. There's no need for an endless peanut gallery of half-truths coming out every time the Cubs don't acquire someone that would have been a nice addition.
