The fact that people root for an entire conference is still strange to me.

Yea, I hate most of the teams in the SEC. I rooted against SC, Florida and Vandy. I only rooted for Georgia because I like Mark Richt. And I'll root for ND in the BCS title game.

It's just an extension of Southern regionalism.

I don't really feel that way for the most part. Other SEC teams losing could give my team a bump in a particular recruiting battle or something like that.

I'm cheering for an implosion of JerryWorld on Saturday, closely followed by an OU win. Usually during bowl season I actually realize how many teams I hate.

Has nothing to do with the South. Might be prevalent there too but folks in the Midwest love the big ten. My older family are all Iowa fans but they pull for all big ten teams. Same with many of my friends and several posters here have expressed this sentiment.

Yep your right. My days have been off ever since Christmas.

It's true, this is Big Ten country and most fans of Big Ten schools feel a bond with the other schools, even the ones we hate. Not sure how that will change with Maryland and Rutgers through.

However, I don't root for Ohio State or Michigan State under any circumstances. I do kind of pull for Northwestern and Illinois except when they play Michigan, and the other Big Ten schools I'll root for under certain circumstances (like the NCAA Tourney if they haven't particularly annoyed me during conference play)

[expletive] that, i'm not pulling for tOSU in any scenario, ever

Yes. Clearly exceptions. My son loves to play "who do you want to win?" with a bunch of teams I hate. Always hurts a little to pick UM over Southern Cal but I do it every time.

Also I'm not at all saying everyone in the MW feels this way. But a lot of people do and I think it's weird.

Feeling a bond with someone that roots for the same school as you is fine, but feeling a bond with someone because they root for a school that has been arbitrarily grouped with yours just makes no sense to me.

I try to pull for Illinois, but it's like dragging a 150lb weight around.

"It makes us look better if Michigan wins."

I still haven't figured that one out, but I hear it all the damn time.

I'm an LSU fan, but frankly I don't like much of the rest of the conference. I laughed at Florida getting pantsed. I did root for Georgia and will probably root for aTm since they haven't been in the conference long enough for me to hate them. I won't root for Bama as the thought of that makes me sick to my stomach.

I think it has to do with the geographical area we share. Go anywhere in the midwest and they are watching Big Ten football on Saturdays. People are very provincial in this part of the country and cling to guns and religion what's familiar to them.

Of course I might have a different experience living in Chicago which is a melting pot of Big Ten graduates.

Indiana and Iowa can just go off and [expletive] themselves somewhere.

There's another SEC team yet to play that you didn't mention....

Considering how easy it is for flawed SEC teams to get all the best press (and everything that comes with that) even after they lose, the reputational capital within a conference seems to me to be a real thing worth considering.

If the SEC is not the best conference in the country, then who is?

They might be the best conference by default, but somehow are still overrated

3-2-1 against the spread so far would indicate they are properly rated by people.
