8 pages and counting on Scott Feldman. Can you imagine what we could do if the FO signed someone who has real value.

Can you imagine the reaction we could get if you ever made a post worth reading?

I was talking about the guy who came in, obviously having not read the last 6 or so pages, in order to deliver a thinly-veiled potshot at the FO for no earthly reason.

I'm sure this time was just an aberration, though.

I saw it the same way.

SP with a flurry of haymakers this round.

Yeah, if I tried to make arguments anywhere near as bad as the ones he's putting forth (33 wins would have cost $150 MILLION!!!), you'd be all over it.

He's losing, badly.

ok, Karl Rove

I was ready to not like this signing, but based upon WAR the Cubs have nearly replaced Maholm and Dempster (5.8 WAR) with Baker and Feldman (5.1 WAR combined, if Baker reverts to pre TJ numbers) and spent only $13MM or so in the process. Granted it hasn't made the team any better yet, but it is still early in the offseason, and they have filled two relatively big holes. Now with $40MM in available payroll left (assuming with arb elegibles payroll sits at approx. $80MM) I would like to see some upgrades at CF, 3B and the bullpen.

2012 Opening Day Rotation: Dempster, Garza, Samardzija, Volstad, Maholm

Projected 2013 Opening Day Rotation: Samardzija, Garza, Feldman, Baker, Wood

It's an improvement over where the rotation was at the end of last season, but I'm having a hard time seeing this rotation being better than average without any further additions.

Still, I like Feldman and would have been happy to see the Cubs give him another year. It's a good move.

I really believe another SP is incoming. It's still quite early in the offseason.

Garz and Samardzija are of course a wash.

I think Baker can be Dempster and Feldman can be Maholm and Wood is better than Volstad.

I really wish I knew how much we had to spend. After arbitration awards and filling out the roster with pre-arb guys, we're up to about $85 million, depending on how you want to count the incentives and if you non-tender Ian Stewart.

It's early and any number of crazy things can happen, but the pickings in this year's free agency class are slim and I'm not entirely sure how to view this farm system as it relates to potential trades. The front office is clearly stockpiling talent, and so much of the high end talent is in the low minors. I'm having a hard time seeming this front office trading away that talent, plus I'm not so sure how far a package built around, say, Javier Baez and Dan Vogelbach would go in a hypothetical bidding war over Felix Hernandez.

I think Baker can be Dempster and Feldman can be Maholm and Wood is better than Volstad.

I'll agree with your second two points, but Baker is such an unknown to me. I find it so strange that the Cubs think he'll be ready for the rotation from day one. Tommy John recovery times have gone down dramatically even compared to five years ago and Baker should make a full recovery, but how exactly can the Cubs expect him to go out and pitch 150 innings next season when he only pitched a third of an inning in the minors last season.

I could buy the Cubs bringing in Baker for the bullpen and letting him recover that way (ala Dempster), but penciling Baker in for a rotation slot right out of spring training is just puzzling to me.

You think Baker can be 2012 Ryan Dempster?

Yes, but only in the brave new world where we aren't measuring pitchers by how many runs score while they are pitching. It hurts my head but I'm trying to adapt.

I saw where you were going, as Dempster outperformed his peripherals by a lot.

I actually see Feldman as that guy and Baker/Vizcaino perhaps combining to be the Maholm, though.

I don't think we're done adding a starting pitcher. I am hoping we get one of Marcum/McCarthy/Liriano and then focus on bullpen/3B/CF/bench.

Love what Theo, Jed, and company are doing so far.

My thinking is that there's plenty to spend regardless. There must be. I think they'd be willing to spend big for the perfect player, say if Kemp, Cain, or Hamels were to have hit free agency. However, since they're not sold on any of the big ticket items they're taking their business to the 5 and dime. If it gets a bit later in the offseason and someone like Jackson, Marcum, or McCarthy, and they feel they can get them at their price they'll get them. Meanwhile, they could be looking into trades for guys like Hellickson or Bauer.

They seem set in building on a young foundation, starting with Castro, Rizzo, and hopefully Jackson/Vitters/Castillo pan out. Then add whichever of the current low level guys pan out. If they're going to make any big signings now, they'll need to be able to contribute when these guys are ready.

I know it seems far away, but if 2015 rolls around, and the team looks like

1B Rizzo

2B ?

SS Castro

3B Baez

LF ?

CF Almora

RF Soler

C Castillo

Possible SP's: Shark, Vizcaino, Loux, Paniaqua, Wells, Maples, Underwood, Johnson

Other possibles: Jackson, Vitters, Szczur, Lake, Vogelbach, Dunston, Shoulders, Amaya, Alcantara, Hernandez, Torreyes, Golden, Martin

Plus whatever they get in the next 2 drafts, international FAs, trades, and reclamations between now and then.

There'a a good chance that enough of these guys pan out to build a very strong foundation. There's also a good chance that there will be several remaining ?s, however, there will also be a ton of money to replace said ?s with quality free agents.

We might be best to just follow the farm system, casually watch some low-expectation baseball, and hope for some pleasant surprises between now and then. If we're comparing the FO to those of the A's and Rays, remember how long it took them to get their teams where they are now as opposed to where we are now.

Why the hell is this thread 9 pages long?

Exactly my sentiments. Of course you didn't get accused of trolling by the haters.

Pretty sure his post didn't include any potshots.

Tim, you know that some of your posters only make direct attacks instead of posting on the topic.

I was genuinely curious, because I left the computer in the afternoon and it was two pages and when I got home last night it was 9 pages and I was drunk and didn't really feel like reading. :hmm:

Actually, I believe that they're doing both.

You understand this is you taking shots at some posters, btw, right?

Oh my God, you're such a victim. Stop being a [expletive], and people won't attack you anymore.

Tim, I really don't see much difference between these two posts. Also, please note in my post I used "we" and not directly attacking any posters.

First of all, your first post was idiotic since Feldman has real value. Second of all, this post is just as dumb if you can't spot a difference between what you and Logan said.
