Holy crap. I thought the sign the wrong scorecard rule in golf was stupid.

The rule that gave the TD to Forsett has to be one of the dumbest sports rules of all time.

The NFL said they're going to review the rule. I don't mind the penalty, though I think it's unnecessary, but negating the refs ability to review the play is ridiculous.

You can kick someone in the groin and the other team gets 15 yards. But throw a red flag when you're not supposed to out of pure ignorance and the other team gets a free TD!

Schwartz admitted after the game that he knew the rule and screwed up. It wasn't pure ignorance, it was frustration which clouded his judgement and decision-making.

I didn't realize that Mike Smith got burned for the exact same thing over the weekend until last night.

Same here. I knew the rule existed, as McCarthy was flagged for it in the preseason and then Arians was flagged for it earlier this year as well. How it cancels out a review is absolutely beyond me, especially when its been beaten to death that 'all scoring plays are reviewable.'

Yeah, I just can't find any sound logic in cancelling out the review because the flag is thrown. I can see the 15-yarder for a number of (iffy) reasons (showing up the ref, delaying the game, etc), but literally can't think of one bit of sound logic for not reviewing the play.

This article explains why it came into being:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/21107400/nfl-to-examine-replay-rule-that-hurt-lions-may-make-change-this-year

The rule was adopted in part because of a situation in a Redskins-Giants game in December 2010.

Officials on the field ruled a fumble recovered by the Giants, and the ball was made ready for play. But Washington veteran linebacker London Fletcher kicked the ball and was called for delay of game. While the penalty was being enforced, Washington challenged the ruling of a fumble.

The competition committee felt that a team could benefit from committing a penalty in that situation, giving it more time to challenge a play. It was decided that the new rule would also apply when a team throws the challenge flag on a play that can't be challenged -- including scoring plays, turnovers, when the team is out of challenges or timeouts, and inside the final two minutes of a half or game, or in overtime.

So basically they created a rule for a good purpose and by adding this to the list of penalties it would be enforced on created a huge unintended side effect. They must have felt originally that throwing the challenge flag would be one way to purposely delay the game in order to give the booth more time to review, but they didn't anticipate how many coaches would forget which plays are automatically reviewed and which plays aren't. They also say in the article that they are considering changing the rule before the season ends.

The Chargers needed to stop the Ravens on 4th and 29 to clinch the game. Ravens dumped it off to Rice.

AND HE GETS IT.

This is the same jackassed ref that couldn't properly judge that Cutler didn't cross the line of scrimmage two weeks ago. There wasn't anything conclusive about those angles, and now he's going to drag the chains back?

satatore or whatever is the worst official in the NFL. He needs to be demoted.

If the Giants plan on letting Packer receivers run free down the sidelines, it's going to be a long restless night in NY.

Are the Packers unstoppable? Perhaps the only thing to hope for is an injury to Rodgers

They almost lost to the Jaguars.

Most teams couldn't dream of trotting Crosby out as FG kicker, and expect to win. That's for sure.
