Castro, Rizzo, Castillo, and Shark might be future contributors.

...and we're done here.

I feel like we should do something fun like figuring out potential WAR totals if we went with the somewhat reasonable Upton + two non-Greinke starters plan.

As soon as the season is over, I'm going to do a massive post outlining, among other things, the 2012 Cubs' WAR by position and outlining why we were so bad. It'll be a nice jumping-off point for what to do in 2013.

can I sign up for some kind of alert so I know when you're doing this?

As soon as I saw that abuck had posted, I thought "Post taking a shot at me, shot at someone else, or relevant baseball post? I'll go with 70/20/10."

I hadn't even considered a single shot at me spread out over two posts. Well played.

Let's pair it up with davell telling us his hopes for 2013 for the bajillionth time.

I'll use live action smilies and possibly some porn for the landmark bajillionth one.

I hope it's not the porn equivalent of the 2013 team you want.

it won't be a lemon party without old davell

If porn is included, it won't be the one eyed, wooden legged, 300 pound types, which I expect the following season to be.

How about Barney, Brett, Wood, and Villanueva for Upton? Vitters, Szczur, and LaHair for Chisenhall and sign McCarthy, Villanueva, and Liriano? Decent? Or way too little for Upton?

Edit to your heart's content.

A team of all replacement players would project at like 45-55 wins right?

That calculation uses some broad ranges, but in that case it's more like 40-45.

Vitters, Szczur, and LaHair for Chisenhall

i wonder if there's any player you could try to obtain with that package, that wouldn't make the opposing GM crack up

The average team had 22.8 fWAR going into today, so I guess that would mean Fangraphs is setting replacement-level at 58 wins.

Wouldn't that set it at ~38 wins?

Then wouldn't the average team have 61 wins?

Stolen from the other games thread...

Here's something that might break your brain. Using fWAR....

                  Cubs A's O's
5+ WAR players 0 0 0
4+ WAR players 1 1 2
3+ WAR players 2 2 0
2+ WAR players 2 5 4
Total wins: 60 93 93

                  Cubs A's O's
<= -0.5 WAR players     7      1     3

The Cubs' problem isn't so much the stars, it's the scrubs.
