I'm feeling a Soriano trade next to continue the youth movement.

I don't think so actually. The Cubs would have a huge power void in the lineup without Soriano. And while it's not ideal to have him on a rebuilding team, it's less ideal to trade him for nothing and still pay him to play for another team. The power/production isn't likely to be replaced by anyone the Cubs can reasonably sign or trade for this offseason, so Soriano does have a clear purpose on this team.

I know it is unlikely, but a scenario where both take starting jobs next year is fascinating.

rubbish, i've been informed by you that both will struggle to break a .600 OPS.

lolwut? Jackson sure. When did I rip on Vitters?

do we even have much in the way of youth to promote? I guess Campana, but I think we pretty much know what we have in him.

Don't people here still love Dave Sappelt?

Pretty sure no one ever loved Dave Sappelt.

Who would even be the next player to come up from the minors of any significance? Aside from Vizcaino, I don't see too much more talent coming into the big league club before 2014 without a FA acquisition or trades.

You're pretty much right.

edit: Unless you're WSR. Then it would be Brooks Raley.

As others have noted that offense is just super-duper terrible. I'll take the under on a .600 MLB OPS from the combination of Jackson and Vitters.

Oh, and as far as Soriano goes, I have no problem if he's here next year even. Trading him makes no sense at all, since he's not blocking anyone, we ARE paying him, it's doubtful we're spending big this offseason, he's playing very well, and he's an excellent teammate from all accounts. Why get rid of him? Keep him here unless you actually get a solid return for him. No reason not to.

From Gordon Wittenmeyer

Sveum says Jax to start 80-90% games. Vitters mix and match, to start vs. most LHPs.

Glad to hear Jackson will start most of the time but not sure why Vitters isn't given the same chance. Didn't Sveum say earlier that if these guys are brought up they need to play everyday?

In Kyle's defense, that doesn't say anything negative about Vitters at all. It could mean Vitters OPS's a .1000, while Brett 0's it all the way out......

I'll be very disappointed if Brett and Vitters don't start at least 50 games apiece from here on out. Dale is obviously big on defense, my guess is he wants to work with Vitters a bit. Not a big deal most likely. This isn't Quade we're talking about.

Kind of annoying that, given the opportunity, Vitters won't get his first pro start in his hometown stadium.

Why yes, I do stand by my claim that Raley's the closest thing we have to a big league starter, even though we're likely talking a 5 starter. And yes, I stand by my claim that he should get a look over a 30 year old career minor leaguer or another chance for Casey Coleman to prove that he's merely bad instead of awful. A few other guys I could see up sometime next year are Lake, Watkins, Struck, and maybe even Burgess.

As for Jackson and Vitters, I'm incredibly excited. Another big step toward the future and anything they do in the big leagues over the next two months is far more beneficial to them and the organization than anything that they would do in the PCL.

I just hope that your average fan is patient with them. While they are important building blocks for the future, they're not phenoms like Castro and Rizzo were when they came up, and not everyone's going to come out slugging the moment they reach the big leagues like they did.

Dumb, just keep Baker in that role then and leave Vitters in AAA

We're totally going to platoon Vitters so he can OPS .900 for 2 months and then trade him for someone that would've seemed impossible in May.

Very possible. The fact we've evidently been shopping for a young 3B, still probably means Vitters isn't truly in the longterm plans. Brett has the right skillset if he cuts down the K's.

I'm also skeptical of Jackson. Hopefully both can have a relaly good 2 months. Not sure either will be around long term.
