I either want to aim for 70 wins this year or clinch the number 1 pick. But I'm not really willing to watch the Cubs start sucking again so 70 wins it is. Just need to go 35-40 the rest of the year.

Currently on pace for 65-97. But as I said at the top of the thread we've played at an 81-81 pace over the last 40 games.

Dempster's always been good, at least since joining the rotation full time, but where was this Ryan Dempster when the Cubs were relevant? Couldnt he have channeled Christy Matthewson, Satchell Paige, and Sandy Koufax all at once in '09-'10?

You mean the Ryan Dempster of 2008?

OH, SO SMALL AND SO NERVOUS.

11-4 since calling up Rizzo!

10-4. He wasn't called up until after the win over the Mets on June 25. So it's 11-4 in the last 15 games and 10-4 with Rizzo.

From the beginning of the season to the end of May, Dempster posted a 2.90 ERA but lost 7 of his 9 starts.

Since then, he just decided not to allow any runs at all.

I don't care about being off by one game. I still like the 11-4 mark.

I keep telling myself that even the worst teams will have mini stretches of success over a 162 game season but it's now been 15 games. Im certainly not saying the Cubs are a playoff team now but they are clearly playing improved baseball overall. There's luck involved and some inhuman starting pitching but quietly the pen has improved a great deal. I'm not sure if the offense is actually better now because it seems like we are winning a lot of 4-1 type games but it's getting the job done.

Cue Beerhere feeling personally offended by your post.

That Ken Holtzman must have been pretty good at pitching. He had three separate scoreless inning streaks of 33, 28 and 27.
