have we seen anybody yet (aside from a recreational part-time self-avowed scout) who's suggested he can regularly be average at 3B? hell, Sveum just recently bashed his present defensive abilities

Sveum's job is not to be accurate. Sveum's job is to offer carrots and sticks to players such as Vitters.

Not to mention he pretty much just said that Josh wasn't ready yet and still had some things to work on.

Vitters sure is racking up the doubles for the second coming of Cecil Fielder on the basepaths. I dunno, maybe they're all ground rules.

I blame myself.

hey, only 1 K is a good day for brett.

in other news, doug davis started the game for omaha... guy is going to hang around forever.

He has to be 52

Vitters is sniffing Top 5 in PCL for doubles after tonight. He was already tied for 7th. Hard to say it's just the PCL when he's hitting better than his (typically many years older) peers, particularly since he's playing in Iowa and not the more hitter friendly parks in the West.

I highly doubt Vitters baserunning is that far below average of other power hitting 3Bers that it's a huge liability. How many hundredths of a of a point of a win share would that effect?

well yeah, if you compare him to only the aramis ramirez and miguel cabrera types, then of course he's going to look like an average baserunner for a 3b. a lot of guys who play 3b are more athletic (david wright, placido polanco, chone figgins) and are obviously going to be more productive on the basepaths than vitters.

So what's the story on this Bijan Rademacher guy anyway?

JC guy who is probably a better prospect as a pitcher but would only sign if he was allowed to hit.

I was going to come on here and moan yet again about Volstad (who got rocked at Iowa again tonight) getting a rotation spot out of spring training. Then it hit me that we saved a year of service time on Wood by keeping him down for a few months.

Theo > me yet again.

You're assuming that Wood started off with an even number of service years.

No, I did the actual maths. Or I tried to. He was at 1 year, 39 days coming into the season. He was kept down until May 22. If I'm doing the maths right, he will miss cutoff for another year by a few days.

AZ Phil was saying, a few days ago, that Wood should have been kept down at Iowa for 4 more days to gain another year before he'd be a free agent. He thought the Cubs should have sent Wood to the minors this past Saturday, pitched at Iowa earlier tonight, then recall him on Tuesday. That would have bought them the extra year of service time.

i can't tell if you're actually being serious with this completely ludicrous statement

the top 5 doubles hitters this year in major league baseball have a combined 19 stolen bases. doubles are for players who have power, not for fast runners.

Speaking of age appropriate prospects, in game 2 of the Smokies DH, Nick Struck went 6 shut out innings with 0/7 BB/K and 3 H. He's now sporting a 3.34 ERA. Should he get another crack at AAA just yet?

Probably, but it's not the worst thing to have him developing in AA. He's still young, and much as I like him, his ceiling isn't that high and he needs to be consistently sharp on his breaking stuff to have a chance to make it as a starter.

60% of vogelbach's hits have gone for extra bases. going to be fun to watch that chubby bastard hit for peoria next year.

hopefully we won't end up needing him (with rizzo hitting .310/.450/.900 every year for the cubs) and we can use him in a c.c. sabathia (matt laporta)/adrian gonzalez (anthony rizzo) type deal.

I just hope for Joey Votto's sake that he hits enough doubles that he still has SOME value left as a player once his lack of speed on the basepaths has chipped away at the good things he does.

Yea, that's an apt comparison.

I had the same reaction when I heard that phrasing uttered.

I'm completely lost about the point you seem to be trying to make.

If one claims that slow baserunning negates offensive production in Vitters case (which currently stands as a .872 OPS), exactly where is the arbitrary line drawn in the sand where the offensive production overcomes the liability of slow baserunning? I take it Votto's offensive production outweighs his slow base running. So does Vitter need to hit .920 OPS? .980 OPS?

We used to make fun of Dusty for over valuing baserunning to this degree.

This argument can essentially be boiled down to:

Pro-Vitters: Why aren't you guys more excited? He's showing that he has the chance to be an average starter.

Anti-Vitters: Why are you guys so excited? He's an average starter, at best.
