Torreyes is 19 all season long, playing High A ball. That's impressive, in it's own right and his K rate shows he's been extremely unlucky, until recently. He's showing surprising pop too, especially for the FSL. Right now, Alcantara and him are 9 and 10, on my top 30, in some order, with Baez, Soler, Almora, Brett, Candelario, Szczur, Vitters, and Lake as the top 8. In close to that order probably.

How big is Torreyes, and how big is he expected to get? What position do most see him ending up at (I know he's only 19 and it's still a guessing game at this point)?

Torreyes is a little guy, 5-9 at the most. He's a 2B now and a 2B he will stay.

And supposedly weighs 140.

This reminds me, have we heard anything about Torreyes' defense this year? I know he was touted as a very good gold glove caliber defender going into this year.

Oof, that's really little. Thanks for the info, guys.

Actually, he didn't make it. Probably was in my 35-45 range. I'm hoping the bat is real. The defense evidently CAN come along though, so that's a positive. He's been around a while, it seems, so I probably should have had him in my top 30, from last year, just based on holding his own in the MWL as a 19 year old.

I had Alcantara at the very back end of my top 30 after 2010 (his Boise season) but he was around 40 for me after last season.

He's listed at 140 but he's probably closer to 160 by now.

Vitters bomb

Genuinely pumped up. Let him finish out PCL, but I look forward to his call up in September. This hot-streak has been pretty substantial. I'd say there is a fair bit of optimism that he's turned a corner.

Without looking (lazy drunk), I'm guessing Jackson didn't strike out tonight? It seems absurd, even to a half-drunk poster on a message board, to type that as anything of importance.

Some good hitting last night

Iowa

Vitters 2-4, 2B

Cabrera 2 IP 2 H 0/3 BB/K

Daytona

Szczur 2-4 2B, BB

Alcantara, who refuses to fade away 2-4

Torreyes 3-4 2B, HR BB, Last 10 games: .324/.405/.649/.1.053 3 HR

Peoria

Baez 2-5 3B

Cervenka, who's turned out to be a nice relief prospect 2 IP 1 H 0 R 0/1 BB/K

Boise

Candelerio 1-3, BB

The pitching was pretty rough, giving up a combined 51 runs between Tennessee, Daytona, Peoria, Boise, and the DSLs. Sadly, my guy Paulino gave up 7 R, 5 ER on 12 H in 4IP. 0/4 BB/K though.

I don't think I've heard anything specifically this year about his defense, but he does have a very good reputation and ONLY has 6 errors this year (less than the rest of the Daytona IFs). He's had a wonderful June, with an OPS of nearly .950. Hitting .341 this month, which looks like it is more representative of what he can do as he is a .365ish (Good lord!) career hitter in the minors. 18:17 BB/K ratio is nuts....and that's his best walk rate so far in his career.

vitters is becoming my favorite prospect.

He's certainly looking like he has AAA figured out. I kinda hope they just let him stay there the whole year and not move him up again.

That'd probably make a good thread. My favorite prospect is Baez, because of the "I'll do WTF I want" thing. The rest of my top 5 though is Torreyes, followed by Candelario, Brett, and Dunston. I thought Torreyes was going to be a top 100 guy when we traded for him, so while that's not happening, I hope and think it's still possible next year. Candelario, because he's got such an excellent approach for his age. Brett, because he seems cocky, in a good way, and we need that. Plus, his fall from grace this season, probably has me pulling harder for him right now. Dunston, just because he seems like a good kid, that's having serious fun right now.

Brett Jackson is probably my favorite, if for no other reason than I hope he becomes a star and I can get a Cubs jersey that has "JACKSON" on the back and it not be one of those stupid personalized ones.

But also a big fan of Matt Szczur, because I was a fan of his on the football field at Nova.

I see that Vitters has been making significant strides this season as far as his overall numbers go, but what has he been doing specifically that has people so excited? His season so far is reminding me of his 2009 season's numbers, but what is he doing right now that has people so impressed? Just curious.

17 walks this season after a career best, 22 last year in 170 more PAs. On pace for best SLG of his career. 2 straight months of sustained production in the .850-.900 OPS range, after not doing so since a 1/2 season in Peoria 3 years. I'm not on the "he's better than Jackson" boat like some seem to be, but those would be the reasons people are excited.

Plus, as that article said, his pitches per appearance may be the lowest in our system, but he's swinging at strikes at an extremely good rate, and he has one of the best contact rates in our system too. So, while he's not seeing lots of pitches, he's at least been swinging at ones he should be.

plus he's doing this at AAA at the age of 22.

That explains it! Thanks. Good to see he's finally "figuring it out" so to speak. How's his defense coming along though? Getting better or still suspect?

Definitely making progress. Can be league average defensively at 3rd now supposedly.
