Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said Friday that the collapse of his 38 Studios video game company probably has cost him his entire baseball fortune, and he placed part of the blame on Rhode Island officials, including Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

Schilling said during a 90-minute interview on WEEI-FM in Boston that he put more than $50 million of his own money in the company and that he's had to tell his family that "the money I saved during baseball was probably all gone."

"I'm tapped out," he said.

It seems that a lot of the time when celebs are broke, it means that they're down to their last few million. If they truely are flat broke, if you had 50-75mm in the bank at any time in your life, there's no excuse not have 2.5MM give or take set aside for a rainy day. I know that these guys are used to a lavish lifestyle, but say they're down to their last 2.5 mil, there's no excuse for them not to be able to live out the rest of their life quite comfortably. To put it into perspective, to an average Amerian making $75K, which is well above an average income. 2.5 mil is just over 33 years worth of 9-5ing.

It's certainly reasonable to cry broke when you have to sell your house and cars because you cant afford them anymore. I mean yeah no ones gonna feel sorry for him but to him he's broke.

The reason I look down on him for claiming he's broke is because he could easily make at least a chunk of that money back. Even though a lot of people can't stand him, his personality and celebrity allow him access to high levels of income that the average person don't have. And of course there's always investing what he has left, which is a gamble (as he now knows), but if you play it relatively safe he can at least make more money off the money he has.

If all else fails, he can bet against the Nets for an entire season.

Freeing the Bum is moot so long as we have stuff like this.

He blames Rhode Island for all the tax breaks that state gave him and he's a noted Libertarian. I'm not crying for him at all. After all, according to him, bad companies should just fail.

This a million times.

50M wasn't enough for him. He got greedy and needed to turn that into more. He failed and I'm having a hard time finding any sympathy.

He didn't sink all of his money into a videogame company because he thought it was a great investment, he did it because he wanted to run a videogame company.

Is not broke, he's just an [expletive].

He gets a huge "retirement" check from the MLBPA.

He'll give it back because he's supposed to hate unions or something...

That's an obtuse description of the situation.

He put his eggs in one basket and got burned. Does he not have advisors? It's a stupid thing to do.

He has his MLBPA pension and could likely get into broadcasting. He made well over 50 mil during his career.

114 million

I do like that in his last contract w/Bos, he had 2 mil worth of incentives to maintain his weight during the '08 season. Should've did that w/Garces.

Would Curt Schilling listen if someone suggested he should do something different than what he already decided to do?
