Is there any talk of bringing Anthony Rizzo up in June?

"That's definitely going to be talked about," Sveum said. "He's done everything he can down there. But once again, when you bring somebody up like that he has to play every day. That's the million dollar question: How do we get that playing time? But that's definitely something we're going to talk about, probably in the beginning of June, interleague play when we need the DH and those kind of things too."

The Cubs will need a DH on June 8-10 at Minnesota, and on June 18-20 on the South Side in the second round of the City Series.

Sveum discounted the idea of Rizzo playing in the outfield, since he's a solid defensive first baseman. Bryan LaHair would have to move to left field to make way for Rizzo, which would mean Alfonso Soriano would be the odd man out.

I mentioned this in another thread, but in May, Soriano's hitting .310/.365/.569 with 3 HR. I'm not sure what they mean by "odd man out", but he's showing that he can still be productive so if we were to pick up 90-95% of his salary, we could land 2-3 decent prospects. If nothing else something similar to the DeRosa package, which I'd take and run as fast I can at this point. Yankees, Rays, Indians, Tigers, Dodgers, Nats, and Philles are a few teams that I could see having interest at the right price.

I want Rizzo in Chicago the moment that it's assured he'll stay under a year of service time at the end of the season. If that's in June and matches the timeframe Sveum says here, then let's do it.

Yeah, me too.

I'm with the others that I only want Rizzo up if he's going to stay. Soriano needs to sit IMO and let LaHair play some left.

I don't know what you mean by " decent prospects" but no team is taking Soriano on, even for free, for two more years after this one, and give up anything that resembles value whatsoever. A team looking for an OF would probably rather get an actual upgrade, instead of Soriano. Yeah, the numbers you posted look decent, but that's him in his hot streak at this point. We can deal him, pay all his salary, and my honest guess is we wouldn't even get one guy back that would slide into our own top 30 lists.

I think Rizzo has to stay down through July to avoid Super Two.

I don't think the Cubs care about Super Two nearly as much as pushing back FA.

I think someone posted in one of the minor league threads recently a chart showing when guys need to be called up after to get super two/have FA be pushed back. I couldn't find it, but I think Rizzo has to be called up sometime in August to have FA pushed back a year.

Let Lahair play left and right and play almost every day. Soriano has looked brutal running lately so he obviously needs to start getting a day or two off a week. Then dejesus can move in and out of center. Campana gets pinched for playing time but lets face it hes less likely to keep playing at the level he has been playing then Lahair is; although they have both been brutal the last week.

That was for Super Two status.

I'm talking a DeRosa package. 2 intriguing arms and a high ceiling A baller that's not quite on someone's top 10. I don't think it's unreasonable.

I think we'll disagree bigtime on this then. We traded high on DeRosa. This is the polar opposite. I think that package is way, way, way more than what a team parts with for Soriano.

Soriano would be traded almost totally for the roster opening/flexibility that offers. He might be able to bring back a lottery ticket type minor leaguer, but multiple? Not so much.

Before I go to bed every night I pay tribute to Jah in hopes that the Phillies or Giants take the dive.

+1. I'm far more concerned with delaying his free agency than super two status. Considering that we're going nowhere this season, there is absolutely no reason to call up Rizzo before late-June and accelerate his free agency....and I would assume Theo feels the same way.

Are you planning on getting Ned Colletti drunk or something?

It's a shame that Josh Vitters isn't playing well because I'm already sick of Ian Stewart.

You shouldn't be. He's got a .826 OPS so far in May now that his BABIP is actually getting back closer to normal (.268 this month after .207 in April).

Yeah, I don't see any reason for Soriano to be the "odd man out" if he's still on the team. Campana is not tearing it up so much that he can't be taken out of the lineup. Soriano does give you the only potential RH power in the lineup, and you gotta play him to trade him.

Soriano-LF, DeJesus-CF, LaHair-RF. Terrible defensive OF, but who really cares at this point. Campana can still see plenty of time when someone needs a day off, as a pinch runner, or as a defensive replacement....until Soriano gets dealt. Can end any Reed Johnson starts for all I care.

As for the package for Soriano, I'm guessing most likely would be similar to the DLee trade. Maybe a hard throwing teenage arm and a couple early 20-something fillers who may have some Casey Coleman type potential to contribute in a spot start on long relief role, if all goes right. But they aren't getting any players worth serious development.

Yeah, this seems like a weird time to be complaining about Stewart.

Are there other Super Two implications outside of arbitration eligibility? If not, I don't really see the Cubs being overly concerned.
