Sleeper Alert: Pat Young, RHP, Villanova (with video)

Righthander Pat Young from Villanova took the mound against Monmouth to open the season. Young, who stands 6-foot-7 and 208 pounds, gave up three runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings for a no-decision.

Young sat in the 92-94 mph range and topped out at 95 with some natural sinking action. His 79-81 mph breaking ball is developing right now, but showed signs of becoming an average slider. He only threw a couple changeups during his first outing.

Seemed like Tony Rizzoti and Jonathon Gray drew the most complements out of the week 1, non-elite(for now anyway) guys. Edited by davell

Starting to like Ziomek more and more after reading up on him following a mock draft having the Cubs take him with their second pick. I just wonder if he's going to be available then.

Kiley McDaniel after the first weekend of college baseball: http://sbb.scout.com/2/1267927.html

Guys who've played their way into first round consideration after one weekend:

Chris Anderson, RHP, Jacksonville (looks like I was right that he's going to shoot up draft boards)

Andrew Thurman, RHP, UC Irvine

Tony Rizzotti, RHP, Tulane

Eric Jagielo, 3B, Notre Dame

Braden Shipley, RHP, Nevada had a nice bump in velocity but there are questions about his command that he must address before he gets himself in the first round mix.

The guy scouts were really buzzing about this weekend was Jacksonville University RHP Chris Anderson. Anderson was masterful in his first outing of the year for the Dolphins, allowing one hit and no runs over seven innings with 13 strikeouts in front of a number of high-level evaluators. The 6’4, 225 pound righty from a Minnesota high school was on follow lists as a possible top-5 round pick entering the year as a big guy with feel for three pitches but has taken a step forward, hitting 96 in his first start.

Scouts considered Manaea's first start a push given his stuff was fine in the first and while it diminished as the game progressed, it was opening day and temps were in the 40s.

Frazier homered twice in his first game.

Slightly different view:

Probably a pretty simple comparison to make solely off bat speed, but he's got a little Baez in that swing.

Yeah, Frazier has the best bat speed in this draft (thought not Baez good).

Few odds and ends: Trevor Williams K'd 8 in 7 shutout innings, Ziomek K'd 11 in 7 innings, and Crawford is sitting 89-92 early in Florida's game.

Law is at Crawford's start, McDaniel at Appel's. Both worth a follow on Twitter.

Ziomek was 88-92 with his FB today. Eric Jagielo(Notre Dame) has certainly started his junior year off right. He was 6-11 with 2 HR and a double last weekend and has hit homers in his first 2 AB tonight. Heard his defense at 3B is shaky, but if he hits like this, he'll rocket up boards. Had a really solid Cape this summer too. Hit .295 with 13 homers in 45 games.

I'm watching Appel on the stream and he looks really good. Pretty much fastball/changeup then throwing a wipeout slider to put them away.

Correction: Jagielo only hit one homer, a 2 run shot. Came off Tony Rizzoti, in a 2-1 Notre Dame win. Rizzoti went 6, gave up 4 hits, 2 walks, and K'd 6.

I caught a bit of that as well. I came away very impressed with the changeup.

In this very early stage, my top 3 are 1) Manaea 2) Appel 3) Frazier

@kileymcd: To clarify, Appel has had plus stuff for awhile but talking to scouts, many felt last night was the best he's ever been. Writing it up soon.

I'll be really surprised if one of Manaea or Appel isn't a Cub come June.

Appel had it all workin and he seemend to get stronger as the game went on. He threw a couple laser beams past Aaron Judge in the 9th though he got away with a hanger in his previous at bat. It will be interesting to watch if Appel can keep this going and start to erase some of the doubts some have about him.

One of the doubts I have about him he alone can't erase. Overuse. Last night was the exception. He was so dominant that even though he went nine, he did it on just 105 pitches. For me, right now, if Appel doesn't distinguish himself as the obvious choice but is in a group with 1 or 2 others, I more inclined to go with one of the others because of that concern.

BA's College Draft Prospects Stat Roundup: Week 2

Last year against Fresno State, Stanford righthander Mark Appel got the loss, giving up two home runs to Fresno State outfielder Aaron Judge in the process. Appel later beat the Bulldogs in Regionals and carried that success into the 2013 season. On Friday night at home, Appel pitched a complete game while giving up one run on three hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts for the win. On the season, the senior ace is now 1-1, 1.93 with 10 hits, four walks and 14 strikeouts over 14 innings.

Indiana State lefthander Sean Manaea tossed six shutout innings against College of Charleston at a tournament in Auburn, Ala. Manaea allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out 10, but didn't factor in a decision. On the season he is now 0-1, 0.90 with five hits, five walks and 16 strikeouts over 10 innings.

Oklahoma lefthander Dillon Overton continues to dominate. After ranking eighth in the country in strikeouts as a sophomore, Overton is off to a blistering start as a junior. He scattered seven hits over eight shutout innings against Iowa this weekend for a victory in the first game of the 2013 Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. Overton did not issue a walk and struck out nine, improving to 3-0, 0.56 on the season with 16 strikeout and one walk over 16 innings. Overton will take on Scott Frazier and Pepperdine at home this Friday.

Appel wasn't the only Pacific 12 pitcher with a stellar outing this weekend. Arizona State righthander Trevor Williams struck out eight over seven shutout innings for the win against Tennessee; Oregon State senior lefthander Matt Boyd struck out nine over 8.1 shutout innings for the win against San Diego State and Washington righthander Austin Voth struck out 14 over 7.2 innings against Lamar. He gave up two runs on five hits for the win.

Pitching and weekend hitting lines also listed in the link.

I agree. I think the "we're looking for a hitter at number 1" is a smoke screen.

Austin Wilson out 6-8 weeks with that stress reaction in his right elbow, per Kiley McDaniel.

This Thursday, we'll get Trevor Williams vs Ryne Stanek.

Jagielo has enough arm strength for 3rd base, he's just not a fluid athlete with enough mobility. (Fwiw, I haven't seen him since HS).

BA's first Draft Tracker of the year (where they list players rising up draft boards rapidly) - no surprises on the names though I forgot the Cubs had previously drafted Chris Anderson: http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/draft/draft-tracker/2013/2614784.html

Bradey Shipley, RHP, Nevada - compared to last year's athletic riser, Kyle Zimmer

Chris Anderson, RHP, Jacksonville - his pitching coach (who coached Matt Garza at Fresno St) compared him favorably to Garza

Alex Gonzalez, RHP, Oral Roberts
