So will the Cubs take Appel if he's there?

I have the feeling that FO is leaning position player unless an arm blows them away this season. Not thinking Appel right now. I'd lean towards Manaea or Stanek.

I think it will be difficult to predict Theo and his team.

I believe this isn't a premium story but let me know if it is and I'll summarize. Link has a good summary of most of the best college prospects in this June's draft (plus mentions a couple of the top 2014 guys):

Thanks for that rasin. Saw Rodon mentioned as someone who would be picked number one this year if he were available. He's a Freshman college guy.

He's actually a sophomore now. And hell, he would have a gone 1.1 in last year's draft.

Ahh yes, forgot classes start in the fall. Guess I just think in terms of baseball seasons. :-)

AJ Vanegas had back surgery to repair a herniated disc. Not sure what his status will be as the season begins in two weeks, but he had been named Stanford's closer (I was hoping he'd start).

Perfect Game's new top 5 HS seniors:

1. Clint Frazier, OF, Loganville HS (Loganville, GA)

2. Dominic Smith, OF/1B, Serra HS (Gardena, CA)

3. Austin Meadows, OF, Grayson HS (Loganville, GA)

4. Justin Williams, OF/3B, Terrebonne HS (Houma, LA)

5. JP Crawford, SS, Lakewood HS (Lakewood, CA)

Dominic Smith is probably my favorite prep prospect in this draft.

If what's written in the article above is accurate, I bet the Cubs give Smith a lot of thought.

Agree, that made me think of him in the same group with Frazier and Meadows. He sounds like exactly what the Cubs want at the plate. Patience, power, and very low strike-out rate. Hell, that draft blurb for Smith at the 12th pick sounds sounds better than all the previously mocked picks.

If Smith doesn't run up the draft board too much this season he could be one of those picks the Cubs could save some bonus pool money on taking him at #2.

Unless they see Smith as the 2nd best player, I don't see them taking him. Or anyone else, to save money for later picks. I've entertained the idea previously, but with the high value of early slot picks, the Cubs have all the leverage to get their guy to sign AT slot at 2. That leaves them close to 500k in overslot money for later, not counting taking very cheap guys in rounds 8-10, that could give them an extra 400k as well. It's definitely conceivable the Cubs can pay slot at 2 and give out a 2 mill bonus with their 2nd round pick and even get a million dollar bonus guy in the 3rd, with just underslotting 8-10 and a slight 100k underslot at one other spot.

Smith's defense is lacking in the OF so I think that really decreases his chances at 1.2 (despite his ability at the plate).

That's a good point, but it's a lot easier to teach a high school kid to run down a fly ball than not swing a bad pitches.

Plate discipline. The bane of so many otherwise talented players. This kid seems to have a handle on one of the most difficult areas. It will be interesting to see this season unfold.

A new mock with the Cubs taking Manaea and Kevin Ziomek from Vandy.

I hope the Astros do take Meadows or a position player because I've got my heart set on Mannea. I'm afraid the astros will steal him away from us though, call it my eternal pessimism.

Absolutely loved the way Manaea tore up the Cape Cod League last year. If he can show that this coming season, I'll agree. But Stanek is intriguing to me too. Whoever it may be, any pitcher will have to really stand out for the Cubs to take him second. Otherwise I think the FO will go with a strategy similar to last year and take a position player first and address pitching with volume in the next few rounds.

Per Jim Callis, Drew Ward was just reclassified and is now eligible for the 2013 draft. Obviously the early hype doesn't match his likely draft spot, but he still might be a first rounder.

Another guy who makes my extremely unlikely dream of Manaea and Whitson slightly more probable.

Or my unlikely dream of getting Manaea and a prep catcher worthy of the Cubs 2nd rounder.

We'll have to see what Hoyer and Whitson's relationship is like now after they parted ways in 2010.

BA with more:

Baseball America has learned that Whitson will meet with Dr. James Andrews today, and more details about the nature of his injury could emerge by this afternoon.

...

Gators officials blamed lingering forearm tendinitis for limiting him to just 33 innings last year, and he left the Cape Cod League after three innings due to shoulder stiffness last summer.

He flashed his characteristic explosive stuff—a mid-90s fastball and a wipeout slider—during the fall and even at times during practice this spring, but he continued to be dogged by shoulder discomfort, although examinations have revealed no obvious structural damage in the past. Whitson refused to speak with Baseball America for a College Preview feature story last month, further clouding his health status.

And so it begins. Karsten Whitson is out for at least the opening weekend due to "shoulder fatigue."

That is interesting. I wonder if he makes it to the second round. Its also scary. Shoulder fatigue is a worse indicator than elbow stress isn't it?

Yes and it isn't close. More often than not shoulder injuries kill pitchers career's, while elbow injuries (specifically recovering from TJS) are becoming more of an inconvenience that delay a pitcher's development by about a year and be able to come back to pre-injury form or better once recovered.
