NEW YORK — It's still unclear whether some of Yankees general manager Brian Cashman's midseason gambles will pay off. Chase Headley had been solid. Stephen Drew hasn't. Martin Prado has been OK. So has Chris Capuano.

One that's obviously paid off? Brandon McCarthy. After throwing a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 win over the Astros Thursday, the tall righty improved to 5-2 with a 1.90 ERA since coming to the Yankees in an early-July trade with the Diamondbacks in exchange for lefty starter Vidal Nuno.

In Arizona, the staff wanted him to trim his pitch selection. So he tended to favor his out pitch, or get "sinker happy," as he said. "There are places that have philosophies and they like to try and and get guys to do certain things," McCarthy said. While he was never directly told to stop throwing his cutter and your-seamer, McCarthy said, it became clear they wanted him to stick with his sinker.

The Yankees went in a different direction. McCarthy said when he was acquired by the Yankees they told him they traded for the pitcher they had seen post a 17-15 record and 3.29 ERA in Oakland. "It was exciting when I got here and they said, 'We want you to start throwing the cutter more,'" McCarthy said. "It wasn't a discussion of why we aren't throwing it. It was just, 'Hey, we want this. And this is what we traded for.' And there was a confidence in that regard where I've got something new to get guys out with."

Kind of annoyed that he's doing THIS well and that it's this obvious that it was a tangible change that led to it. Making it less likely he's a buy-low guy.

What's the conventional wisdom about teams not wanting guys to throw the cutter again? It makes no sense to me, it can't put more stress on the arm than a slider or curve can it?

Arizona and Baltimore are stupid is I think the main thing to take from McCarthy and Arrietta.

Also Bundy in Baltimore event though it was literally his best pitch and did Arizona make Bauer stop throwing one too?

Poor Bundy, had a wicked cutter that put minimal stress on the arm (I know it can put slightly more stress than a 4seamer but still nowhere near the stress of Cuvers, Slurves, Splitters, Sliders, and Sinkers).

Baltimore forces him to stop throwing his cutter and instead throw more offspeed pitches (which I believe there was a bit of a conflict between the Bundy camp and Baltimore organization about this even before the injury). Then about 90 days later he blows out his elbow throwing more offspeed pitches.

Will never know if that was the cause of the stress on the elbow but I could see the Bundy camp blaming the O's stupid organization for wanting a 100mph fastball guy with wicked movement to start ripping off tons of sliders/curves.

Was my thinking too. He's not coming cheap this offseason.

Boers and Bernstein pointed out this article...wow...I mean wow...

I'll paste my favorite part in case you don't wanna give Telander any clicks...

Some day Kris Bryant will be old, still in Des Moines, a beard flowing like Abe Lincoln’s from his chin, a thousand or so minor-league home runs to his credit. Starlin Castro will have won a World Series crown with the Yankees and be long retired. His shortstop replacement, Javy Baez, will have followed the Sox’ Gordon Beckham to the Angels and out of baseball, and a new Kerry Wood clone for the Cubs will have turned his 20-year-old arm to mush while pitching 15 consecutive innings of no-hit ball against the Reds, then losing.

Eh, with the minimal financial commitments the Cubs have heading into the offseason, he shouldn't be pitching himself out of their price range. His performance of late just makes me more excited about the possibility of a Lester-Arrieta-McCarthy-Hendricks-Wada/Straily/Doubront/Turner rotation.

he's certainly pricing himself out of getting both him and lester

Really? How much do you expect he'll get?

Before this Yankee run, 1/10 or 2/18 would have been my guess. If he continues tearing it up the rest of the year I think you're looking at least at a Feldman contract, 3/30, if not 3/36 to 4/48.

I don't see how that puts him + Lester out of the realm of possibility, unless the payroll is going to be much lower than I had in mind.

I am hoping/expecting the Cubs to go after one big name arm (say, Lester) and one mid-level Maholm/Feldman/Hammel level arm (the need for which might not be there with so many back end starters already in the organization) but McCarthy has definitely priced himself out of that area. Obviously I'm not completely sure what their price range is but I don't think they want to make two multi-year commitments to pitchers this offseason.

I've never done this before: I'm refusing to give that guy a click.

Man, Masterson has been awful since he went to the Cards. As a side note, while he was getting shelled today, Jerome Williams went 8IP with 1ER.
