Pretty classless of deadspin to make light of such a horrible crime.

Holy crap, Phil Hughes has a 4.7 fWAR this year (good for 5th in the league). That's more fWAR than he's put up in the last 3 years combined (4.3).

he's been hugely hittable (.343 BABIP / 24% LD / 3.76 ERA)

still, 2.6 RA9-WAR isn't bad at all

Really pathetic team records for career HR's at each position:

C - Jason Kendall (PIT) - 66

1B - Wally Joyner (LAA) - 116

2B - Jedd Gyorko (SD) - 31

3B - Don Money (MIL) - 78

SS - Adam Everett (HOU) - 35

LF - Greg Vaughn (SD) - 72

CF - Don Lock (TEX) - 71

RF - Hunter Pence (HOU) - 88

DH - David Ortiz (MIN) - 42

* I excluded D-Backs/Rays

So, yeah, no second baseman in Padres HISTORY has ever had more than 30 CAREER homers before Gyorko

Prince Fielder, Alex Rios, Shin-soo Choo all are combining for below-replacement-level production

This makes me wonder...does anyone remember what it was like in the pre-advanced stats era?

Would someone have looked at Choo's numbers (.241, 12 HR, 39 RBI), compared it to last year's numbers (.285, 21 HR, 54 RBI) and said 'eh he's not hitting as well as last year but still not too bad', when in reality he has completely [expletive] the bed?

3/4 of the way through the season? Yes, I think most people would look at those numbers and say he was bad, especially the .241 avg.

No, nobody would have looked like that it was OK. It wasn't pre-discovering the wheel, for [expletive]'s sake.

the traditional stats do sort of mask the true gulf in his value year over year, which is the point of what umfan is saying i think

Obviously that basic stat line doesn't show how bad he's truly been, but even just on its own it would have clearly been a disappointment in terms of offensive performance.

Are you still pissed we didn't sign him?

I'm still pissed we didn't sign every big FA. Theo's had a ridiculously lucky streak where basically every big FA and every big pitcher has inexplicably [expletive] the bed or ended up nearly crippled, but he's still an evil dick and I [expletive] hate the timeline The Plan with every fiber of my being.

I'm trying to think of the last big FA signing that didn't end up providing pretty poor value...

Technically it was just an extension, but Jeter's big contract with the Yankees went alright. Beltran kinda [expletive] the bed at the end of his Mets deal but they got what they paid for.

The next best outcome may actually be Alfonso Soriano, believe it or not.

What are you limiting big FA to?
