Adrian Gonzalez is another first baseman who isn't aging well. He's been very mediocre. Looking at the lines put up by Pujols, Gonzalez, and Fielder and then constantly seeing Cashner get injured just makes me love Rizzo even more.

The way the aging curve has veered young in MLB over the last five years has been crazy.

He is only 32? I would have sworn he was mid 30s.

Maybe it's a bit younger than where it was 10 years ago, but it's not crazy. If you look at the fWAR leaders over the past few years, most of them are right where you would naturally expect them to be age wise: between 26 and 32 (Trout being the only real outlier). I don't see some shocking trend where the "prime" curve has shifted dramatically.

Pujols is 34 and Fielder has a bad body. Their declines have not been shocking. Gonzalez is the one that has surprised me a bit; I figured it would have been a couple more years before his WAR dipped under 3.

I want steroids and primes that last into late 30's/early 40's back.

Pujols got off to such a good start, and I figured he was still hovering around a .900 OPS. Noticed tonight it's under .800.

That contract.

Yeah, it's gonna get bumpy riding that one out. Still, it might be trumped in the worst value category by Verlander's before all is said and done.

Vernon Wells will forever be the worst. Actually, no... B.J. Upton is well on his way to being the worst value ever

Mike Hampton? That ended up being ugly.

Yeeeaaaaahhhh, I forgot he existed.

Hampton: 8 years, $121 million, 2.9 rWAR

Wells: 7 years, $126 million, 8.1 rWAR

Upton is going to make a case though. 5 years, $75.25 million, -1.4 rWAR (so far)

Bobby Bonilla? Aren't the mets on the hook for him until 2036? I know they didn't sign him, but they negotiated his buyout.

Hard to categorize that one since it has less to do with Bonilla's return and more to do with Wilpon being foolish and falling victim to Madoff's ponzi scheme. That and the Mets didn't give him the original contract, Florida did. The Mets just took the last year they owed him and got stupid with it. That's the Mets fault. And yes, Steve Phillips was apart of that mess.

speaking of bad contracts, the dodgers signed brian wilson to a 1 year, $10m contract with an $8.5m player option for 2015. i thought this was a joke when i first heard about it, but it wasn't. so far, not so great for the dodgers.

On the upside, that signing drastically increases the chance of Brian Wilson being beaten into a coma in the parking lot of Dodgers Stadium.

I'm pretty sure CJ Cron was found frozen in a cave and then thawed out by Sean Astin and Pauly Shore or something

Is it the longest face in baseball?

Also more pressing information during this boring Saturday:

Giancarlo Stanton will be in the home run derby

For novelty sake I still want to see Ichiro pitch at some point and bat in the HR derby. Didn't he say a few years back that he could hit 40HR a year if he wanted but he'd only hit .220 so he'd rather play the way he did?
