I'm sure all of us who have been to or listened to a Cubs game in recent years has come to expect the crowd to boo when the team (or certain players) is playing poorly.

Last night after Carlos Marmol got out of the inning, he seemed to be yelling at the crowd as he walked off the field. He was obviously lit up by Cubs fan during that 8th inning and it seemed to motivate him.

I feel it has to have a negative affect on the players even if they say it actually motivates them even more. Thoughts?

I dont think many notice it. I dont think Carlos was yelling at the crowd, I think he was just yelling in excitement that he got out of it and looked good doing it.

I said as much in the game thread. The crowd was a bunch of stupid pricks who started booing by ball 2.

ETA: I don't think he was yelling at the crowd though.

They paid their money and have seen the Marmol Show before. How else are they going to send a message that he needs to start earning his money by doing his job? (That message is already lost on one veteran.)

If a few boos from the hometown paying customers rattle him in a meaningless May game, he won't see an October game.

The people that attend Cubs games are some of the dumbest people I've ever come across. The stuff I hear is just mind blowingly stupid. I'm sure it's like that at other parks with other fans too, but it is tough to listen to some of the stupidity in the crowd and not get angry.

I should also note that the dumb stuff I'm talking about is almost always baseball related.

He'll only get that message if it comes from the crowd?

The argument isn't really about whether the boos should rattle him or not. It's whether those people booing are idiots. They are.

I mean, sure. They can voice their displeasure all they want...but if they think they're actually accomplishing anything (or, at least, anything positive) at all then they are pretty much morons.

This the very definition of cro-magnon, meathead logic.

Do you think for one second the the crowd "sending a message" will have any tangible effect? That it'll somehow make him "try harder"? Or that the FO will make moves based on a bunch of mouthbreathing knuckledraggers venting their ignorant rage?

Yes, you're right, I'm sure Marmol's wildness it a matter of effort, much like Wood's injury problems.

I don't get the people who have such itchy booing trigger fingers, but I really don't get why people get so riled up against those people. Sports fans boo their players when they do poorly. They do it everywhere. It's a fact of life. There's nothing to see here.

I'm also sure Marmol isn't aware that he's been pitching poorly.

Don't worry, people are sending the message.

Do you agree that the collective IQ of those people booing is at least 10 points lower than those not booing?

Personally I don't boo, but you often hear the cliche real fans don't boo, when in reality real fans do boo. Loudly. Fake fans tune out until the team becomes good again.

A great many vexing things happen with regularity. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be vexed by them or accept them as the status quo.

No, not really. I have come to the conclusion that loads of otherwise intelligent human beings are in general really stupid about sports. Plenty of highly educated people boo and do a lot of other things one could describe as stupid. It has something to do with the whole fanatic thing.

Those things that can be fixed are worth vexing over. But booing sports fans have existed for as long as athletics has existed and will exist long after your last post bemoaning the existing of booing sports fans. Fans who boo are just not something worth getting worked up about in my opinion.

Ok, I actually agree with this. It drives me nuts because most of my good friends are really smart people but they are sports meatballs. That's not to say that they're stubborn about it or unwilling to learn, but I can only do so much.

A fair stance. I'd never start a crusade to go into ballparks and try and dissuade groups of fanatics from booing, but if I hear someone wax moronic like benchwarmer did, I feel compelled to address it.

I will say this, in my small circle I have noticed the less the person participated in sports the more likely they are to boo.
