Am I the only one this doesn't make sense to?

The Rangers will pay all of Dempster's salary while the Cubs will pay all of Soto's salary, making it a virtual wash in terms of money, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Is he trying to say that the amount of money we're paying makes the prospect return a virtual wash? If so, 1) way to write English for a living and 2) noooooooope.

I understood his statement as a "virtual wash" in salaries, meaning that it has virtually no impact on each team's payroll, but if the Rangers are paying Dempster's salary there is no way that can be the case. I fail to understand his math.

not that this means anything, but villanueva is .472.568/.667 over his last 10. hopefully he stays hot.

3/4 of daytona's infield will be really fun to watch, assuming alcantara is still alive

When all's said and done, I wouldn't be surprised if Alcantara ends up in Tenessee when he returns leaving Saunders at SS and Lake or Watkins to Iowa.

Again, as I've learned today Mayo sucks, but he's the only one showing some semblance of updating the Cubs prospect ratings so, I noticed he had Vizcaino 3rd and Villanueva 6th in the Cubs org. This doesn't include 2012 draftees though, and strangely still has Jackson at number 1 ahead of Baez.

Without knowing for sure, I doubt he's reranked the rest of the top 20. If I remember correctly, he had some guys absurdly high. Maybe Reggie Golden? If so, he's definitely not reranked anyone.

I was hoping the GvilleCub reaction to the trade would be better than this. Sad.

I was hoping he'd never visit again.

Nay. As long as it is only a few posts, I like 'em. A lyrical genius he is not. Meatball flinger is much more in his wheelhouse.

I was listening to one of the Score shows today and the idiot host was ranting about how callers don't understand that the rebuild has to take "years" because they're still "shedding the terrible contracts from Hendry's era." This guy said this TODAY. After this year the only big contract they have from the Hendry era is Soriano's. DO YOUR JOBS BETTER, SPORTS JERKS.

I've identified the problem.

That argument also only works when the contract you're ridding yourself doesn't justify the performance. He must not have noticed the part when Dempster was one of the best pitchers in all of baseball in the first half

Wow, that's crazy. How quickly things change.

It has to take years because that is how the front office has decided to go about doing the rebuild.

While I won't even attempt to argue that, there were a few comments alluding to a lower payroll over the next couple of seasons allowing for the renovation process. No clue, but maybe Ricketts NEEDS the extra money for that?

Considering the mayor wasn't even taking his calls, I'd say that's a pretty good assumption.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking/chi-epstein-defends-dempster-on-atlanta-trade-fiasco-20120801,0,4673128.story

In depth interview from Theo in which he explains what went down, and he also defends Dempster....

Epstein said 2-3 days before the trade was reported on the Braves’ website, he told him Dempster to “start processing it,” because the L.A. deal was probably not going to happen. On July 22, Epstein told Dempster the team had to make a decision quickly or lose the chance to get Delgado.

The next morning, Epstein called Dempster again.

“We consummated a deal with Atlanta quietly, and told Ryan ‘We have a deal, so you don’t have to decide right away, but keep thinking about it,’” he said. “That was a good conversation, and then the story leaked. And with the nature of technology and social media these days, these things obviously spread quickly, and like wildfire.”

The trade had already been analyzed extensively on baseball websites and Twitter by the time Dempster denied the trade on his own Twitter account. He later told the media he awoke from a nap to hear the news, and was clearly infuriated.

“Ryan never got the opportunity, for, I’d say, more than an hour, to fully contemplate Atlanta with a deal actually in place,” Epstein said. “I feel for him. All of a sudden, instead of having time to contemplate it privately, he had everyone telling him what to do, everyone asking him questions about it, and it became a nuisance for him.

It seems like the Atlanta deal and probablity of the Dodgers not working out was fully communicated to Dempster. Still don't know why Dempster got all pissy, but whatever....

This is what I kind of expected. I think Dempster played the card of one of the Cubs or Dodgers caving and it didn't work out. I also figure he wanted out of Chicago in the end, because spending the next 2 months in Texas probably isn't going to help his trade value at all. Probably wishes he had taken the Atlanta deal and stuck in the NL.

If anything, that article reaffirms to me that Theo is really freaking good at his job. Dempster made that a really difficult situation and I don't know if Theo & Co could have handled it any better.

That and the fact that Dempster really did tank the deal because he was pissy about being confronted with it by the media.
