Whoa that's not good.

Hey anyone know where another guy who's probably a bust is...Austin Ree? Started strong and initially I liked him as much as Wells. Haven't heard anything good since his 2010 debut.

He's in the pen at Peoria

Sure seems like any mildly intriguing positional talent in the low levels is struggling offensively.

I'm actually not that bothered by Simpson's start. By most accounts, his velocity isn't completely there and he's building his arm strength up. Yet, he had a 11:4 GO/FO ratio, which seems to suggest that something in his arsenal is generating good movement to get the guys to pound it in the dirt.

If he's like this mid-season, then that'd be a bit of a disappointment. But ... for early in the year ... with the situation that he went through ... I'm not going to be that reactionary over his first two starts. He's getting groundballs. Let's see if the velo comes back, and if it does, let's see if he can get some more whiffs.

Frankly, I just want Simpson to make it through the season healthy and in one piece. I'm not going to get any hopes up unless he hits the 100 inning mark.

Any news on Simpson's start?

Non-prospect

Just a terrible reach. Thanks Tim.

To this day I have to wonder what Wilken was thinking on that one and how Hendry, knowing the condition of the organization not to mention his own job allowed it to happen. Simpson had 3rd round at best written all over him. As I recall, the story goes that someone, I think Atlanta were considering him as a supplementary or 2nd round pick and Wilken being the scouting mastermind that he is couldn't let the potential mid rotation but more likely back end starter slip through his fingers.

Pretty sure it was the Angels and one more team. There was some post-draft rumors that some team was considering him in the first, but I don't recall if a specific team was ever attached to it.

You know, I still don't have as big an issue with the Simpson pick as others did. They saw him when he was throwing mid-90's with 2 good breaking balls and a decent change. That's a tempting combination. Then, IIRC, they saw him late in the year, when he was still throwing in that 92-94 range again, after going through his mid-season lull. The board wasn't exactly eye-dropping at the pick. There were prep bats (O'Connor, Sale, Cowart, and a few more), the prep arms weren't exactly eye-dropping at that spot (Foltyniewicz).

From what we know now, there were clear spending limitations pre-Ricketts, and I'm assuming that the first year of the Ricketts regime, while the pockets were loosened, that there were still some limitations. While we eventually over-slotted a few guys, we were probably out of the market for the high cost options, like Zack Cox, Zach Lee, and some of the prep guys available. That left some questionable collegiate picks at the time - I have never been a big fan of Vitek and Wimmers, then and now.

I don't think I said it was a great pick then, but I also said I didn't mind the pick that much, IIRC, and the pick itself (and not what's occurred afterwards), is still not something I look back at and am troubled over significantly. Relative to what was on the board then and what we could do, okay, it was a nice gamble on a guy who, when they saw him, seemed to have a high ceiling and could come cheap. Not bad considering the other realistic options.

Pitchers get injured, that goes with the territory. He's not the first or the last guy to lose a bunch of velocity at some point, for whatever reason.

It appears that he's got some promising control, breaking pitches, and a diverse arsenal. If he had Struck's velocity he'd probably be a very, very nice prospect. But with no velocity, different story.

If later on he's 6 mph faster, he'll probably be pretty interesting. But, arms get damaged and while sometimes velocity does return at some point, it's certainly not so likely and not to be expected.

I'll say this about Simpson...on draft day I thought his arm worked fine and that he looked like he had solid upside. This is an interesting season for him and I'll be following all year. If his velocity picks up then good things are ahead.

The good news is that Vitters doubled. The bad news is that it was first-pitch swinging and he was thrown out advancing to third.

Both he and Rizzo thrown out trying to take extra bases today.

Which sadly has no bearing on the stupidity of your comment.

I didn't say it did.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to be denigrate a double. But we already know he can smack first-pitch doubles.
