it's weird how the @MSU results are being mentioned but not the @UI results, in IU vs. UM comparisons

The point of my post was not a comparison or the transitive property; I merely intended to show Michigan is struggling a bit now. It will end, but they have not played as well recently.

Huge win against the best team in the country. Need a strong finish to get out of the 8-9 game.

no way

Way.

I think Florida is bored. They aren't significantly better than UI, but I think they're better.

Even if they were mentioned....

14 point win vs. 2 point loss on a buzzer beater

<

23 point loss vs. 4 point win

But yeah the point was to show that Michigan can't really be argued as better than IU. Michigan's best win is either @ Minnesota or home vs. Ohio St. by 2 in OT. IU has 4 wins better than both, including the one of Michigan.

I think Florida is a lot better than us.

Tharpe is a [expletive] disease. If mclemore wants to try to get involved in the offense anytime here, that might work.

How much longer until Minnesota is on the bubble? They've beaten Illinois and MSU in conference play, and that's about it, right?

And Wisconsin. Along with decent wins against Memphis and Stanford, two other potential bubble teams. They should win 3 of their last 4, and that'll make things safe for them.

That KU win let's me know they are back. No field goals Made in either overtime, self has really got the refs to step up. Masterful coaching.

They made one late in the 2nd OT.

yeah, tharpe's game winner was the only FG they made in either overtime. crazy.

wasn't overly impressed with either team, though both team's studs had off nights. two overtimes and neither team gets to 70? i actually feel better about iowa st's chances monday vs ku.

I think their SOS is like 3rd right now, and their RPI is still in the teens, so that should help them.

But man have they been awful. They will probably recover after this next game and save their spot in the tourney, but who knows...their confidence could be completely shot by that point.

Dammit, I didn't watch the game. Just heard about it from OSU fans on facebook. Rough game for Smart and McLemore.

Is Tubby going to lose his job?

One would think he's close. These late-season collapses are pretty much becoming par for the course; a main reason I was never that excited about Minnesota. Under Tubby Smith:

2008: 10-2 non-conference, 8-10 Big Ten (losers of five of last eight regular season games)

2009: 12-0; 9-9 (lost eight of last twelve games)

2010: 9-3; 9-9

2011: 11-1; 6-12 (lost ten of last eleven games)

2012: 12-1; 6-12 (lost six of last seven and eight of eleven regular season games)

2013: 12-1; 6-8 (lost eight of eleven currently)

This will probably reverse-jinx them and they'll manage to beat IU next Tuesday now, but, dang, that's ugly. And it's a trend at this point. (Though, in Smith's defense, Minnesota is not an easy place to win . . . especially in today's Big Ten.)

Yeah the Gophers kinda scare me next week. Reeling, near desperate team. At home in thw biggest game of their season. IU seems to be more rusty than refreshed when coming off an extended break. Plus its tough to imagine s team winning at OSU, MSU, and Minn in a row .

Just a quick note here. In the process of watching some game film on your signee Basil Smotherman. Looks so much different than the guy we saw most of the last year and a half or so. Starting to look again like the prospect who showed so much potential as a freshman. In better shape, all-around game and athleticism look improved. I've been pleasantly surprised. Don't know exactly where he will fit in just yet, but definitely need to be thinking about him a heck of a lot more for final Rivals150 than I would have been expecting to say six months ago. Credit to him for the hard work and he looks like he should make meaningful contribution at Purdue. Fun to start looking at film and see improvement!

The officiating was horrible on both ends, but OSU was hardly jobbed. They shot 10 more threes than us (with essentially the same # of overall shots taken), yet they still had more FT attempts. They got plenty of calls.

As for KU only hitting 1 basket in both overtimes, OSU only hit 3 total. So it's not like OSU was raining from the field and we were just getting bailed out and living at the stripe. Both teams scored mostly from the FT line after regulation.

To be fair, part of the reason both teams couldn't score is because both teams are among the most efficient defensive teams in the country. Still, you have every reason to be confident about our game against you. We never play well in Ames, and ISU is the kind of team that gives us fits. We struggle against teams who can draw Withey from the paint and/or score without going inside. You should have beaten us earlier this year. Not confident we'll beat you on the road. That said, you did lose at home to a truly awful Texas team, so who knows.

lost at texas actually. undefeated at home.

i do agree...isu is not a great matchup for ku. isu struggles against teams that get physical with them...ku doesn't strike me as that kind of team.

Also strength of schedule gaming is why I prefer margin based ratings. More predictive of future success.

Absolutely. It's one of the big reasons the RPI is a farce. And it's stupid that IU is anti-gaming their strength of schedule, but they are. You're just not going to convince me that games against the top-25/50/100/whatever are not far, far more telling than games against sub-150/200/whatever teams (a point I agreed with earlier in the season when SSR said IU was overrated in Pomeroy because they were "Wisconsin-ing bad teams").

And one of the biggest reasons why Iowa's RPI is around 80 while their Pomeroy/Sagarin are around 30. They beat a bunch of 250-340 teams by 30+ instead of beating 150-225 teams by 15. Of course they also get no credit for losing 4 games to good teams that were one possession in the final minute.
